Details:
Hello, I’m Shakkar, I live just north of Boston. I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s enjoying such great music from artists like Jimi Hendrix, Boston, Survivor, Night Ranger, Bad Company and Whitesnake. To me, a song’s success depends on two key elements – Content and Delivery.
When I would visit my grandmother, I would hear many songs from Elvis and Engelbert Humperdink. It was in these early years that I grew very fond of the vocalist. From the tenderness of Dan Fogelberg to the raspy Joe Cocker voice, I absorbed it all. Then one day I would get a preview of a voice that would have an impact on me for the rest of my life. Back in 1974, my dad was watching television. I sat down as he went through the channels. He happened to come across the airing of California Jam, just as a young David Coverdale was launching into Mistreated. Now, I have to tell you, my dad hated modern music, especially rock. So it surprised me when he exclaimed “that guy can sing!” At this point, I listened to Elvis mostly and Engelbert, because it’s what I knew. But I couldn’t get past Coverdale’s performance. Unfortunately, it would be many years before I would hear that amazing voice.
Along the way to that point as a teenager I listened to country (yes, even when it was uncool.) I also got into the band Survivor, Joe Lynn Turner and Deep Purple. Hopefully this gives you an idea of how I shaped my style.
Later this Fall I will be releasing my first full CD. It will feature a variety of styles from power ballads to bluesy rockers and a touch of country. I chose America Keep The Light Shining, as my first single. Remember content and delivery? I’ve always been attracted to songs that tell a story. And in my life, September 11th 2001 had a huge impact. I felt especially close to the events as two of those airplanes originated from Boston. As I sat in horror watching the devastation, not only of the Towers, but of The Pentagon and Flight 93, I needed to express what I was feeling. I have relatives in New York, so I feared for their safety as well. I sat down on the 12th and wrote this song. Who knew that 5 years later, we would still be engaged in battle overseas. I fear that there is no quick end to all this. There will always be conflict. But my friends, music gives me hope. When I see events like The Moscow Music Peace Festival, Live Aid, Farm Aid and such, I see music reaching people. I see music as a form of expression that speaks far clearer than any language. It can transcend hate, it begets love. Music can raise the soul of a man in despair, and bring tears to the eye of the toughest of men.
I’ve been writing songs since I was a teenager. I have finally come to a point in my life that has afforded me the opportunity to share with you some of my writings. I have been blessed with working with some incredible musicians. Chris Bianchi, another artist here on CDBaby, is playing acoustic 12 string on this single. Make sure you check out Chris’s CD. He’s an incredible guitarist and great friend.
In closing I hope that you like what you hear and you find hope in my lyrics. Come back and check out my full CD. I put a little something in it for everyone. Thanks for taking the time to read my story. Enjoy Music, and you will Enjoy Life!!

Peace to All, Keep The Light Shining

Shakkar
