Puerto Rican Hammond Organist and Keyboardist, José Nelson Ramírez fell in love with jazz at a very early age and, while exposed to other styles while attending Berklee College of Music, his special touch of Latin jazz resonates clearly in his compositions. In Imported from Paradise, José Nelson shares his life experiences. Each tune has a particular meaning making it a musical journey through the Caribbean.
"The first tune I wrote was Galatea, on a balcony overlooking the breathtaking Sir Francis Drake Channel on Peter Island in the British West Indies. Galatea, the name of Sir Drake’s ship, is the name of a sea-nymph in Greek Mythology often referred to as “the queen of the sea.” As a life-long lover of the sea, the beautiful sites off the west coast of Puerto Rico, was my inspiration for the title song Imported from Paradise and Marinera. Sardinera was written on Mona Island, a piece of paradise 47 miles west of the main Island.
Añasco, what I called home for ten years, honors the town’s natural beauty and historic appeal. Caminando (walking) is a tender jazz melody dedicated to my dear wife Lourdes and Llegó Javier a more upbeat tune, with a light touch of reggae, a tribute to the birth of my youngest son. Someday I’ll record it again and have Javier play the guitar solo. Pitirre is the soothing hum of a night bird that greets me when I get home from a gig, a sound I recreate with the keyboard.
Solo (alone) is all about the process of composing a tune and later being able to share it with others. Last but not least there is Amaretto written by my longtime friend and music companion Luis (Tatito) Torres. I guess he was inspired by the drink…so cheers!"
José Nelson Ramírez was the musical director for two years at the Heineken Jazz Jam sessions in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico playing with great Latin Jazz musicians such as Dave Valentín, Giovanni Hidalgo and Humberto Ramírez, Pedro Guzmán, José González, Nicky Aponte and many others. In 1996, he played with his Paradise Band at the Puerto Rico Heineken Jazzfest. His Hammond organ is heard on many local recordings and he has worked as a keyboardist for local artists such as Wilkins, Ednita Nazario and Iris Chacón.
