A rich social and political history dating back to the 1500’s, breathtaking Victorian architecture, 32 miles of beach, the sweet smell of salt air, the music of the surf, afternoons on a sun drenched beach, sultry summer evenings, lazy rainy mornings, foggy winter nights, sophisticated and elegant yet relaxed and calm, I could go on but words don’t really do the island justice. You can find pictures of Galveston and links to other sites on my webpage (below left) but pictures aren’t really enough either. There is a spirit, a mood about the island that I find quite healing. Try as I might, I can’t explain this feeling in words. It is my hope to capture it with music and I suspect I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to capture its complexities.
This first release, Sirens and Storms, is actually more about my rediscovery of Galveston and my longing to return than a true reflection of the island. I lived on the island as a teenager but moved away for college. It wasn’t until 2005(17 years later) that I returned and fell instantly in love with Galveston.
The song 14th & Broadway was inspired by one of the most beautiful intersections on the island. It is defined by Scared Heart Cathedral and the Bishops Palace (there are pictures on my website), over 100 years old, the buildings rest on a street covered in a canopy of trees and lined with Victorian homes. I spent a week living in one of those homes and it was there, waking to the sound of gentle morning rain, bird song and church bells, afternoon walks through old neighborhoods and lazy evenings on the porch watching the traffic (or lack there of) pass by, that I made the decision to change the focus and direction of my life and devote myself to capturing Galveston in music. The island truly is my muse. I have more desire and inspiration to write music now than I’ve ever had.
Other songs include, Sirens Of Home: a loose analogy to the Sirens in Homer’s Odyssey, Dancing On The Strand: a celebration of Galveston’s Mardi Gras Parade, Falling For My Muse: a statement of my love for the island, Moonlit Surf: the beauty of moon light dancing on the waves and Prelude and Storm: inspired by the horror I felt watching as hurricane Rita loomed closer and closer to the island only one short month after my rediscovery of the island.
