This is a Movement guitarist/vocalist Sean Carney has a message for a certain movie star turned California governor. “Tell Governor Schwarzenegger we’re coming for him!”
Whether or not This is a Movement makes it out to California before November’s gubernatorial election forces the “Terminator” star out of office is up for debate. But what isn’t is the fact that the four-piece punk act from Providence, RI is catching the attention of those outside of New England.
Forming after Carney and guitarist Ryan Flinn moved from Florida to Rhode Island in 2005, This is a Movement blends more experimental influences like Minus the Bear and Rx Bandits with a No Idea-esque beard punk sound (or as Carney puts it, “a mix of punk rock and trippy stuff. We call it pot-punk.”)
After meeting drummer Kenny Pedro at high school and bassist Jayson Mignacca through local shows, the band was originally known as This is It. But the death of a pop icon created a ton of confusion for the band.
“As we started promoting out band Michael Jackson died and his farewell movie unfortunately titled “This is It” was huge.” said Carney. “We’d play shows and people would ask if we were a Michael Jackson cover band. Once we even played a block away from a screening. It was awful.”
So the band changed their name to This is a Movement, and recently released their EP, “Walk Away.”
The EP was recorded in Cumberland, RI and was produced by George Dussault. Carney describes the EP as “real raw” and that it has a natural sound.
So maybe the band reaching California before Governor Schwarzenegger is doubtful, but this isn’t. If you’re a fan of Hot Water Music, or No Idea records punk rock, than This is a Movement is right up your alley.
