In late December 2009, a kindling acquaintance banished me with “you’re nothing but a bitter old man.” It was a comic yet thundering surprise, rousing a need to defy augury: I must seek a newer world.

Renewal seemed best sought in song, so I posted an ad on Craigslist for “accompanist/arranger, my key.” Somehow Bálint Sapszon noticed and responded, this project evolving from a happy compatibility—a wonderful surprise because in my younger years I could not find an accompanist whose touch was right for me. I gave up singing for writing. Now, decades later, a joy: “When the singer is ready, the accompanist appears.”

And so, invoking Milton’s Sonnet 19 (a meditation on “that one talent which is death to hide, / Lodged with me useless”), I seek to combine writing with singing, and hope the union of talents will release the whole Self. “Self” uppercase recalls C.G. Jung and his use of “Other” in _Memories, Dreams, Reflections_. There he suggests awareness of something beyond the lowercase self, a fate that most of us resign our lives to, not heeding the quiet _entheos_ or enthusiasm that call us to a higher Self.

Besides this lower world, Jung writes, another realm exists, “like a temple in which anyone who entered was transformed and suddenly overpowered by a vision of the whole cosmos, so that he could only marvel and admire, forgetful of himself. Here lived the ‘Other,’ who knew God as a hidden, personal, and at the same time suprapersonal secret. Here nothing separated man from God; indeed, it was as though the human mind looked down upon Creation simultaneously with God.”

The vision of Divine Wonder recalls my instant sensation when Apollo 8 sent back the first photos of the Earth as seen from distant space, instantly evoking in me a favorite thought from Bobby Burns: “O wad some Power the giftie gie us / To see oursels as ithers see us.”

The CD is a concept album that includes a 20-page booklet to hint personal high- and lowlights, and to examine song choice. I imagine each song as indispensable to the next song, and the booklet indispensable to the songs. I hope listeners will understand my need to offer only the CD, not individual songs, especially since this CD is Part 1 of a larger project: Part 2 can''t be completed unless Part 1 finds an audience.

Since some people may prefer a digital edition, _To seek a newer world_ is also available by download; the "Liner Notes" can be clicked and downloaded in different format on https://www.tradebit.com

Hearing my voice is a new experience. Imperfections nag, but at least my airy nothingness has a habitation and a name. One thing is clear: Nothing good could have happened without the touch, care, and sounds of Bálint Sapszon.

By the way, singers here are forced to lump their style into a genre. I’m sure many visitors found my genre selections misleading, reminding me that I love the sound of Patsy Cline no matter what label people thrust on her. Given limited choices, I had to select labels that feel unnatural. Yes, I dream of a New Age, but I flinch at the label, not sure what it means when I imagine listeners seeking Musical Meditation. And surely we all have a spiritual nature, but my spirit ain’t what other people call spirit, and the term “intellectual” has few happy connotations, while “easy listening” sure enough lives hard. I hope my contemplative style makes thinking more fun, but the only true genres are Cringe, Like, and Love. Songs here are among my Loves, and I hope among yours. I’m perfectly content to hear you say, “I much prefer so-and-so’s version,” because the lyric’s true power belongs to the Muse, and how it moves you to seek a newer world.
