The Hypnogogic Orchestra makes music, but it may be unlike anything you have ever heard. Conceived of science and the desire to explore human perception through lucid states, THO combines artistic vision and digital technology to produce music capable of not only aesthetic creativity but literally a doorway to another reality.
Utilizing raw organic and digital audio material combined with synthesized sound, noise patterns and live improvisation, THO harness the power of hypnotically involved soundscapes, digitally dissected samples with blended melody and rhythm to create an ever-changing energy vehicle capable of seducing the listener into that waking sleep where dreams and reality collide.
Established by artists and physicist Dr. Edwin Drood at his remote studio somewhere in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, THO is the product of a lifelong study in the field of dream research and out of body experience. Through the use of rhythmic noise and specifically constructed tonal patterns, audio signals are processed to align with known Theta fields or brainwaves, electrical frequencies emitted by the human brain and most present during meditative and dream-like states. By exposing people to audio waves, especially at elevated volumes, specific theta patterning and interpolations, the listener may be able to sense or even experience these lucid states.
In order to properly present this project to the public, E. Drood enlisted the services of Daniel Watts, Stuart Mizrahi and James Beck, three musicians with the skills and philosophical direction needed to build The Hypnogogic Orchestra in to an auditory experience. Designed not only to test the perceptions of lucid states, but also to capture the imagination of its audience, THO was officially started in 1999.
Débuting as an audio installation piece at ILK studios in Denver, Colorado, the Orchestra quickly found its place among diverse avant-garde and experimental art communities, and began receiving airplay on independent and college radio stations. The group’s development has always held a close relationship with underground art, music and performance movements, often becoming deeply involved with independent production groups and collectives. During their first few years, the Orchestra worked heavily with Backwards Records, Kallisti Kollectif and 36 Invisibles to organize multi media art and music events. By 2001 THO had become a familiar presence at media shows, music events, clubs, galleries and even junkyards, sharing speakers with many internationally recognized projects.
The summer of 2001 marked a turning point in the project’s development as their first official CD was being release through Three Headed Goat Records, the three member accompaniment of Daniel, Stuart and James took leave in an attempt to pursue and develop THOs creative process in other parts of the country (mainly New York City and Seattle). Despite the spatial separation, the members musical bond persisted via modern communion. Exchanging media and recordings, THO continued to collaborate in the writing process via the internet and mail, and recorded together whenever the circumstances permitted.
In conjunction with a short west coast tour in 2002, THO began releasing tracks on various compilations, but by late 2003, the project was officially suspended when founder E. Drood mysteriously disappeared. Feared dead by late 2004, it seemed THO may never again release or perform new material, but when all seemed at it’s bleakest, a package of newly updated work and audio experimentation was received in the mail from Drood, postmarked from a mountainous region in Bavaria. With new insperation and hours of new material, THO has once again emerged from the dreamstate and begun releasing material, most recently on the Backwards records compilation Music for Monsters out in late 2005. Upcoming plans for a live album, as well as a new studio album are planned for release on Three Headed Goat Records in 2006 and 2007.
