If you haven’t heard Nada Problem, you need to. And do it soon. Born in California, raised in Oklahoma, Nada P (a.k.a. Nathan Phillips) has spent the last decade and a half honing his skills as an emcee, blending lyrical ability with a keen ear to create his own, unique sound. Nada truly is a “wordsmith”, a rapper’s rapper.
A graduate of Oklahoma City’s Putnam City High School, Nada P’s upbringing helped to shape his perspective on hip-hop and life in general. Influenced early on by the likes of Beastie Boys, Rakim, Wu-Tang Clan & Bustah Rhymes, he kept his ears open and his pencil to the pad.
Now those influences include everything from Aesop Rock to Brother Ali to Jay Z and Lil Wayne—not to mention virtually everyone in between. Nada Problem’s music is universal—it’s not limited by unoriginality or handicapped by stigma, which for music lovers is a rare breath of fresh air.
Never one to take the easy way, Nada jumped headfirst into Las Vegas’s live music scene, where he spent most of the last five years sharpening his wits and his vocals. While in Sin City, he wrote, recorded & produced his fourth LP, Hard In The Paint. Now he’s back in OKC, and he’s just dropped his newest gem, All Day—an album which Nada admitted that he’s “finally happy with.”
In a small southwestern city, you’ll be hard-pressed to find decent entertainment, let alone a mind-bending musical poet. Alas, however, here he is: a pied piper, harkening rap fans back to their roots—dope beats and even doper rhymes. It’s like a block party on wax. Don’t wait, or you’ll miss this one. --DLS
