At first glance the history of this trio may appear brief, since we have only had a few gigs to date, over relatively few years. However, our was connection instant, natural, and possibly inevitable.
I initially met drummer Claire Arenius in the middle 1970s, jamming at Attila Zoller’s Vermont home. To say that she has grown immensely since then would be a gross understatement, and she has since performed with Melba Liston, Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, Ray Copeland, Tal Farlow, Mose Allison, Richard Davis, Barney Kessel, Slide Hampton, Attila Zoller, and many others. She is also a fine composer, and contributed the beautiful and mysterious ballad When Worlds Touch You.
I met bassist Jamie MacDonald a few years ago on a New Hampshire bandstand, and we have worked together at a variety of New England gigs since. I enjoy and appreciate his versatility, and adventuresome musical spirit. Aside from his deep commitment to the Open Music Collective, his music school in Brattleboro, Vermont, Jamie has appeared with Sheila Jordan, Bobby Bradford, The Rod Levitt Orchestra, Peter Eldridge, and Harvey Diamond.
The music included on this recording consists of three compositions by members of the trio, three Zoller compositions, a standard song, and a blues (The last two were selected on the spot). The audience was warm, neighborly, and bravely followed us through unexpected turns. Along with the venue, they contributed in a great way to the success of our concert.
So there you have it. Three friends in music with a deep connection, past and present, to that part of Vermont, who have threatened each other with a musical collaboration for some time. We agreed on a concert date, it was advertised, and there was no backing out. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed playing. I also hope you also enjoy the unintended recorded sounds and occasional imperfections often edited from studio recordings.
Special thanks to Tim Gruntman, Nicholas Parslow, Bob Laclaire, Allan Chase, Kate Parsons, and the late Attila Zoller, whose tremendous spirit still resonates throughout the area, and inspires us.

(Mitch Seidman has performed at concerts, festival, and nightclubs throughout the U.S. and overseas, and has recordings on Jardis, Cadence, and Brownstone Records. His performances and recordings have included numerous renowned jazz musicians.
