After is a record about internal contradiction, dealing with life
changing loss, heartbreak, and epiphany. The title track (Before) and Its
counterpoint (After) are the thesis statement of
the album, they contain the same emotional tenor, share lyrics,
phrasing, hooks, and mood, but argue opposite philosophies. Melodies,
textures and rhythms weave around each other like internal dialogue.
After is harmony in contradiction spelled out in rock music.
Maps On Fire formed in Seattle in early 2010 where brothers Don
Ayers, and Andy Ayers started writing and recording together in there
Basement after years spent on opposite sides of the country. Those
early demos eventually formed there debut album After released in fall
2010. The brothers then brought in Bassist Rob Sharp, and have since
been developing new material based on the warmth, and energy of the
full band atmosphere, writing extremely focused melodically driven
songs as a counterpoint to the sweeping, experimental ,recording
project nature of After. The resultant combination is already
garnering there live show praise. This shift in tone should not come
as a surprise -a restlessness, a desire for change and artistic
expression is at the core of Maps on Fire. It''s built into the name,
implicit in the the burning of old ways of doing things is finding new
ones. Like everything else music needs to evolve.
