Details:
Upon graduating from the Eastman School of Music in 2003, pianist/composer Julia Hatamyar began working towards her life-long goal of creating modern “pop music” which is steeped in musical tradition, not rebelling against it. Following in the footsteps of such through-composing contemporaries as Joanna Newsom and Sufjan Stevens, Julia began meticulously handcrafting the traditionally notated scores which would eventually become the Mary of Egypt EP.
Conceptually, this short collection is vast in scope. Each piece tackles a particular group of themes, and employs specific traditional and non-traditional compositional techniques as a means of thematic illustration. Subject matter is influenced by Julia’s personal experience, as in the work of most singer-songwriters, but also covers issues such as climate change, consumerism, the global recession, American politics, and mental illness, to name a few. Always the romantic classical pianist, Julia also seeks to incorporate elements of 19th century art song into her work, mainly by incorporating elements from modern and classical literature into her subject matter and lyrics.
This homemade and self-released EP was the culmination of completed scores and Julia’s ongoing study of electronic music and studio techniques. It features performances by many of Julia’s Eastman peers, and many of the instrumental parts were written with the style and character of each individual’s playing in mind. All electronic percussion was created from public-domain recordings, and features interesting sources which reflect upon each song’s particular subject matter. For example, the electronic track Gamin, which muses about the effects of advertising on our psyches, features re-worked samples of cash register and ATM sounds.
Mary of Egypt has grown into an 8-piece ensemble, performing live portions of the EP as well as other works by Julia Hatamyar in the greater New York City/Boston area.
