Details:
From their first album in 2006, the self-titled Soulfire, Duncan Breen and Dave Starke have been composing and playing music that will tug at your heartstrings and your conscience. Songs from their first album such as Live My Life and Rwanda were deeply rooted in the long tradition of protest music, and reflected the personal journeys Breen and Starke made as they re-examined the history of South Africa and the forgotten and buried histories of the continent.

In the four years since they released their debut to widespread acclaim, the band’s music has evolved and deepened, while retaining a sense of fun and playfulness. The Road Ahead, their long-awaited second album, shifts from catchy anthems like Change the World to softer ballads, like the haunting I Loved You and Sunlight, and has a new richness that will delight old and new Soulfire fans.

Like Tracy Chapman, Manu Chao and Neil Young, Soulfire’s music is shaped by an intense engagement with the world. Breen’s passionate involvement with human rights and Starke’s experiences living and teaching in a rural town in Zululand provide the fire behind The Road Ahead. With singer-songwriter Gavin Coetzee joining them on lead guitar, the band invites us to explore Goree Island, a starting point in Senegal for visitors seeking to understand their ancestors’ histories of slavery in Africa. Xenophobia is an impassioned plea for recognition of the need to address xenophobic violence in South Africa.

Weaving between gentle love songs and protest anthems, The Road Ahead urges us all to stand up for what we believe most strongly in; to explore our personal “Place of Ghosts”, and to keep memorials to those who suffered injustice alive. Soulfire’s powerful, catchy, and melodic music will move and challenge you, and their songs will find a very special place in your heart.
