Details:

I started out thinking this album was going to be just acoustic and guitar..... my Nebraska of sorts. But it got away from me. And I think in a good way. There were a lot of false starts on this one...I mean, I started writing it pretty much after Tourist was released. I could never get the right sound......probably why I was settling in to wanting it to be just acoustic and vocal. But when I got some time to start working on the songs I started hearing more and more..... maybe a little pedal steel here, some ebow over there, some backing vocals. The next thing you know I was doubling backing vocals and stacking up harmonies, having some harmonized guitar solos, some weird noises here and there...

Anyway.... like I said, it got away from me.

I put in the album notes that it was recorded in my parent’s basement.... truth be told I did the basic acoustic tracks upstairs in the living room. The sound was there and I had a huge window over looking the ocean. It was really amazing..... I had finally got the image of the album I wanted to make in my head and it was getting started.

Moving to the basement was a different story.... I mean, it’s a finished basement....but a basement none the less. I did the drums, bass, solos, and vocals down there. Also, the house wasn’t empty anymore...so I was sneaking downstairs at 3 am to do vocal takes. In the end I had to ditch those, and do them over, but really for the better. I started thinking a bit too much. One thing about doing an album by yourself....there is no one to turn around to you and tell you when you’re getting off track.

After that it came to mixing, and I was ready to take the reigns for about a half a https://www.tradebit.comn I realized, I just couldn’t do it this time around. I was getting ready for a cruise ship gig, and as much as the studio was ok to record in...it just wasn’t set up to mix...and neither was I. So I sent it off to Dan Turcotte...an old friend of mine from my Brighton days. https://www.tradebit.com had the skill and the patience to go through the tracks and make them into the album you hear.

Artwork... another thing that I like to do...... I knew the album was about coming home in a sense. The songs were written when I was in a relationship that was actually working.....so that in a sense was a bit of a feeling of coming home, as well, I was working for 4 month stretches on a cruise ship..... all I could think of was home. I had also just moved from Toronto to Nova Scotia.... all my family is here, and that in itself was a bit of a homecoming. But as much as Tourist wasn’t all about travelling literally, Long Way Home is not about the literal distance to your house.....

I wasn’t sure how to actually convey that into a cd cover...without the traditional railroad track pics, or airports and the like.... I had many things in mind.... me with a cow, an old farm house... but in the end...I went out, took some pics in the driveway, my guitar leaning against a fence by the deck and the road in front of our house... and that was it. No grand ideas, but it felt.......true.

p.s.... not sure where the cow idea came from.

Cheers,

Shawn
