The Shepherds was founded in 1968 by Oliver Edwards, Sr., affectionately known as “Pops." With the help of his son Joey and friends, George Warren and Antwain Kirkland The Shepherds has carried on the commitment to ministry.

The original Shepherds drifted away from each other after touring and selling their debut records in Memphis and throughout the Bible belt for over a decade. Pop with his sons, Oliver Jr. and Joey Edwards in 1980 recorded” I Know Who Jesus Is” and “God Is” in 1981.

In 1988 they put their first project out on TyScot Records a national label, entitled “Hiding Place”. They were nominated in several categories at the GMWA for New Traditional Artist, Group of the year and Best Traditional Album.

Tyscot released “Alive and Restored” in October 1995 and God Is became their hit song, placing them on the billboard top 40 charts. Later that year, The Music in the parks series requested that The Shepherds accompany the Flint Symphony Orchestra during the 4th of July celebration.

In 2000 The Shepherds recorded” Live In Durham NC” on Worldwide records and 2002 moved to Amen records and recorded “Trilogy Live in Augusta GA” The CD placed them on the billboard top 40 again coming in at number 20.

On April 1, 2003 Rev. Oliver Edwards Jr., the guitarist and background singer, for 34 years suddenly passed away. Honoring Oliver Jr., they recorded “Trilogy”. February of 2005 Tragedy struck again in 2008 when friend and Drummer Jonathan Echelberger passed away from cancer. Also with several personal changes, It was time for the group to reorganize.

“New Beginnings” is the first CD release on their new label Strawberry Vinyl Records. “The personal changes and the passing away of our brother and friend, the first song” Make That Change” was the best song to introduce the project with” said Joey.

“God has blessed our ministry. It was time to venture out and increase our territory” said Oliver Sr.
The Shepherds continue to answer the call God ordained Forty- two years ago.
