Details:
Taking their name from a chapter of James Joyce''s ''Portait of the Artist as a Young Man'' Hellfire Sermons are proud to plough their lonely furrow through indie music''s less worn grooves. This album is their first since 2003''s "Hymns Ancient and Modern" which collected together their acclaimed vinyl releases from the 1980s and 1990s together with newer material, and marks their evolution to a three-piece, with a sound compared to early James, Pixies, Pavement and Throwing Muses. ''Luminous Crocodile'' itself gives a nod to Josef K whilst recounting a dream of immateriality, while other songs discuss subjects as diverse as the invasion of Iraq or Chairman Mao''s infamous 100 Flowers campaign in the 1950s.

''Journey End To End'' uses a soundscape inspired by Joy Division to descibe the journey home from night shift, dog tired and dazzled by headlights, while ''Mystety of Life weaves together such diverse elements as The Damned, the Dr Who theme and the soundtrack of the Volvic water ad. The album finishes with a discordant dig at the nonsense printed by British tabloid newspapers.
