Details:
There''s something that grabs you from the moment "Terror of The Countryside" begins-- a realization that you''re nowhere near the city, miles away from the next breathing soul, and happily lost. Delicately fingerpicked guitars are layered with ambient sonic flourishes and restrained percussion-- all of which we''re hearing for the first time from a band better known for noisy guitars and broken drum heads. When Jonathan Leahy''s vocals finally arrive, they''re spoken just above a whisper, and there''s a trembling certainty in his voice which gives the lyrics a "this is the final page of the story" gravitas. How that story ends might read bleakly on the page, but here the music gives "Terror" an undeniable energy.

"Canyon Girl" fittingly begins with the sound of birds chirping, wind blowing, and far-away cars winding their way through mountain roads-- one can only assume the band stuck a microphone out on their back porch and let the tape roll. After such a heavy trip with the previous song, the happy, lazy strumming that kicks off this tune is a welcome change of pace. Leahy''s lyrics fit into that comfortable pocket between country storytelling and second-hand American imagery. When the chorus touches down, replete with harmonies and Chamberlin, the song truly soars. Wherever it may be, we''re there with our own vision of the canyon girl who "don''t want nobody else around". In lieu of a bridge, the band gives us an acoustic breakdown followed by an up-tempo ramp-up of the chorus, ending the song with a hand-clapping singalong that''s enough to make anyone long for a spot in Topanga Canyon to call their own.

Bookending the EP is a live acoustic performance of "Terror" with guest vocalist Morgan Kibby (M83, White Sea). This recording is a stripped-down, warts-and-all version that actually may be the more definitive recording of the song. Both the exposed acoustic guitar and the female harmonies allow the song to breath in ways the full band arrangement could not, and it''s a welcome inclusion on the release.
