REVIEWS:

Diversity Rating ****
Michelle Grégoire

Winnipeg pianist and composer Michelle Grégoire takes diversity seriously. The liner notes for her impressive new CD contain quotes on the subject from an anthropologist, philosopher, even a motivational speaker.

But it''s through her music that Grégoire really demonstrates her strong belief that everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard.

And that''s terrific news, because the voices on her second album, as they were on her first, are among the most acclaimed in Canadian jazz: trumpeter Kevin Turcotte, saxophonist Kirk MacDonald, bassist Jim Vivian and drummer Ted Warren.

Grégoire''s real talent is not only to write memorable tunes full of rich contours and twisting melodies, but to use her musicians to develop her ideas into colourful, elegant wholes, a sort of little band version of Maria Schneider''s orchestra.

The CD''s centrepiece, a three-part suite called Gratitude, shows the range of her compositional talents, ranging from the airy prettiness of the opening section, to the hymn-like qualities of the middle part and the intense blowing of the finale.
