There are two fairly drastic extremes represented here. On the lighter side are cynical, irreverent songs running the gamut from winking social commentary to bad locker room innuendo. At the other extreme are crushingly serious songs dealing with weightier matters such as euthanasia, addiction and war. Cave man farts. Laughter ensues. Cave man gets eaten by tiger. I’m sure such things have always existed side by side.
The end product is kind of a twisted schizoid yin and yang that doesn''t see much of a distance between humor and tragedy, though. You can’t really appreciate one without knowing the other. You aren’t worth much as a human being yet if you haven’t experienced both. And no matter how much tragedy there is, it still seems that life is just funny as hell. At least it is to me.
