Details:
MacGrath questions the meaning of love, art, history and purpose. With a full-bodied, robust voice unlike no other, MacGrath explores both the light and the shadows it leaves behind.

With the voice of an acrobat and the musicianship of lion trainer, MacGrath is a ringmaster who was born to sing.

When he arrived on the scene with In My Own Company (2009), a six song EP, MacGrath turned heads and ignited hearts. While Roy Orbison and Rufus Wainwright comparisons were drawn, the EP garnered MacGrath two Nova Scotia Music Award nominations.

After touring Canada by train and performing with a Barbershop quartet, MacGrath teamed up with producer Jason Michael MacIsaac (Heavy Blinkers, Jenn Grant) and Gypsophilia to record Cooper Hatch Paris.

MacGrath’s vision for the album began with herds of elephants, rolling storm clouds and sweeping vistas –he wanted to go big or go home.

Cooper Hatch Paris is a tip of the hat to old world romantics. With lush arrangements and rich instrumentation, MacGrath has crafted a gorgeous collection of songs filled with love, lust and longing.

With soaring horns and gang vocals, “Gift Horse,” pays homage to a universal understanding of life’s process and purpose. “Bird & Cage,” features a gorgeous duet with Canadian chanteuse Chantal Kreviazuk.

The album’s biggest brooding number “God Forbid,” comes alive with an ethereal duet with songstress Erin Costelo.

“Crooked Heart,” recalls late night cups of coffee and the restlessness of a broken heart. MacGrath kicks it up a notch with “State of the Art,” a magical lyrical homage to the stage.

In a reflective moment, memory shifts, the past becomes the present. “Apple Tree,” is for the dreamer within, as the song poetically strolls through the valley of lost dreams.

As a nod to romantic hearts, “My Boyfriend,” is a queer bend on a traditional love song. With swaying choral vocals and twinkling piano, the song embodies a sense of timelessness.

“Celebrity Death,” throbs with a disco beat and a sense of glamour. With splashes of the fantastical, MacGrath is an artist of grandiose production and pure intention.

Every now and then one needs to veer from the “Straight and Narrow,” an ode to letting go of the past and living only for the moment. MacGrath lets it all hang out, belting it out from the belly of his soul.

The album closes with “Sullivan’s Pond,” a song permeating a night two lovers spent beneath a starry sky. As the reflection in the lake and the night bugs linger, the song carries blossoming hearts on.

Ryan MacGrath is one of our favourite musicians on the Halifax scene right now. Each time we''ve seen him (three shows in the past three months) he has had the audience in the palm of his hand. We look forward to hosting Ryan at a house concert soon so we can share the dynamite - great voice - intriguing yet accessible songs - wicked stage presence! - Paula and Mike Fredericks, https://www.tradebit.com"

Ryan has an elegant and world class sound yet to be discovered by the masses but when he is, others will appreciate and respect his gift as much as we do. He is unique and has the makings of a classic musician. On top of this he is a gentleman and a pleasure to work with. -Deb Northcott; Stellula Music

Ryan is a rare songwriter; his songs are sharp, sexy, self-depricating, and melancholic. His songs are perfect little stories about what goes on inside. His voice is from another planet; smooth and sad and full of gentle power. I have often had a song of Ryan''s stuck in my head for days, only to have it replaced by another. And to top it all off; he''s always wearing great shoes. -Stewart Legere; Actor/Writer/Performer-Plutonium Playhouse and Zuppa Circus
