Details:
The Rebel Body EP, from female-fronted indie-rockers Wendy Darling, represents a culmination of the band''s growth and tumult over the course of their young years together.

In early 2009, with critical praise of their full-length debut Half-Told Bedtime Stories…, a strong local following in their hometown of San Diego and buzz about their energetic live shows, the band decided to re-locate to the San Francisco Bay
Area. The risk paid-off in large part, with a Japanese record deal, a single in the Japanese FM Radio Top 100), and the addition of a major booking agent. The next several months saw the band touring extensively in support of the album while developing new material and trying to put its roots down in a new city.

Lo and behold, despite the creative energy the band continued to share, amidst a fledgling economy, personal challenges, and a relentless touring schedule, two of the band''s members had to return to San Diego.

Determined to continue sharing their music with their fans and the world, the band continued working to complete their EP, despite the distance that separated them. The six songs on Rebel Body EP represent a great departure from the band''s previous work, while retaining some of its core attributes that make the band unique and captivating.

The sultry, sweet vocals of lead singer Cori Rush are still present, but the innocence and timidity felt on the band''s first release is traded for confidence and sex on Rebel Body. Gone is the timid girl who lamented, "We are all alone. We are lonely people, I suppose," on Half-Told. On Rebel Body, Rush asserts herself everywhere. In the fiery album opener “Saudade,” she scolds the would-be one-night-stand at her local bar singing, "You think you know better than anyone else?!...''L.L. Cool Me,'' that''s what you think?! You think it turns me on, but you''re wrong!"

And even the more tender moments on the album see the front-woman embracing her voice and owning her words. On the slow-burn of "First Native Peoples," it''s as if she is beckoning to you directly when she coos, "the lights are on in my house…it’s wide open." Cori refuses to mince words—she is an open book on these songs, and her voice is heavy with hurt and sorrow, but also hope and determination. Thematically, she crams a young lifetime’s worth of material into a very small space; For instance, the album’s most radio-ready track “Black” tackles a breakup, the burning of her Southern California hometown, and her uncertain future, all within the confines of a seemingly simple pop song.

Sonically, the album ventures into territory that Half-Told Bedtime Stories certainly did not. The core rhythm section of childhood best-friends Hector Verdugo (drums) and Jon Freeman (bass/keyboards) has continued to hone their soft–loud–soft dynamic, but here they accent the songs with flourishes of latin rhythms and digital percussion. Guitarist and backup vocalist Nate Heller produced the first album and is behind the boards once again, this time taking bigger risks with the production that result in songs that trot all over the stylistic map. Following in the stead of their front-woman, the ‘lost’ boys of Wendy Darling boldly explore the incorporation of alternately fierce and restrained drumming, thumping bass lines and syncopated rhythms, far-out spacey effects, and gritty guitar tones with plenty of riffage, often within the span of a few minutes of music. On their debut, the boys seemed intent on creating a platform for Rush to tiptoe across. On the Rebel Body EP, they jockey for position, challenging each other to reach beyond the comfort of convention, often with startling results.

So, what lies ahead for the band? The bond they’ve developed over the years has been tested by distance, personal conflict, financial woes, and crumbling ambitions. But to deny the path that led these Darlings to create their most recent, and most personal work, would be to deny the work itself.

Experience the Rebel Body EP as if you were one of these young musicians. Imagine standing on the precipice of a great cliff. Behind you stands an army of doubts and fears. In front of you is a drop into a deep dark canyon of the unknown. Steel-up, and dive in.

You won’t regret it.
