Details:
Poor Genetic Material was founded by Stefan Glomb (guitar) and Philipp Jaehne (keyboards) as an experimental project mainly working on soundtrack material. When they met German art rock band Alias Eye in late 2000, opportunity was there to work on more song-oriented material. Singer Philip Griffiths (son of the legendary Beggars Opera singer Martin Griffiths) joined the original duo to work and record together. Some more line-up changes brought in bass player Dennis Sturm and drummer Dominik Steinbacher, a tight unit upon which PGM’s music is built.
During the last few years Poor Genetic Material have made a name for themselves in the prog- and artrock scene with their albums Summerland (2001), Leap into Fall (2002), and Winter’s Edge (2003) and Spring Tidings (2006). Especially the two most recent albums generated a lot of interest for the band with the strange name.
After a long term project spanning four albums, fans of the band were wondering what would be next. Already during the Spring Tidings sessions, the band played with ideas that went in a direction different from the long, atmospheric tracks, that have become PGM’s trademark: Shorter, less complex songs, the recording of which did not require extensive studio work but spontaneous sessions in a live atmosphere.
However, Paradise out of Time does not mark the end of Poor Genetic Material’s dedication to Prog- and Artrock – at this very moment the band is working on a concept double album -, it just offers a different, but hopefully no less interesting side of the band.
Prog dogmatics may miss 20-minute tracks, synphonic keyboard layers or uneven meters. Paradise out of Time focuses on the songwriting, on melodies and lyrics. Those, however, who listen and don’t care about genres and pidgeon-holes, may just find and enjoy a band writing and performing at its very best.
