After touring the world, publishing her albums on several countries, a Latin Grammy Award Nomination and becoming a National Legend in Colombia, Petrona Martinez releases her brand new album Las Penas Alegres. Petrona is heir to a rich history of traditional singing and dancing called bullerengue. It consists of a lead singer or cantadora composing and improvising verses while a choir is responding melodic obstinatos and traditional drums comps them.
On this tradition, the cantadora is a respected matriarch who before modern media was the main source of information in the community. Her role protecting and guiding her people through music still very important to these days. On Las Penas Alegres Petrona explores her roots deeply and bring out soulful performances about her own experiences through her 71 years of a remarkable life. Special guests include Carlos Vives band matesEgidio Cuadrado (on El Gavilan Negro) and Mayte Montero (Milagros) plus traditional tambora singer Martina Camargo (La Petronta Martinez) and virtuoso Euphonium Master Ramon Benitez (La Varita de Maria Angola).
