Paul Shonk’s Insomniac-tic Debut Into the Business

The night was clear, and the wind was still. I was walking towards the deck of the Junction Buoy restaurant, a small place looking over the St. Clair River just across from Canada in Marysville, Michigan. The deck was crowded, causing me to take a standing spot near the back stairs, gazing onto the live musical performances of the nights’ featured talent.

Their names were Paul Shonk (bass/guitar), Rick Matle (guitar), and Steve Adams (drums). They were extraordinary. That desired “cool gang of misfits” feeling filled the air, except they weren’t misfits at all, they were exactly who they needed to be, and exactly where they needed to be. The front man, Paul Shonk, is actually a familiar face around town, as he is normally seen performing solo gigs at similar venues. Recently, Paul was finally able to release his first album, with the help and direction of drummer Steve Adams. No Time For Sleepin’ is a collection of original songs that took nearly two years to write and produce. The album is a tribute to the hard working family man, struggling to provide and get by while surrounded by the economic collapse that is left of Michigan. Paul’s music on the album transitions from a southern style folk to a darker, more serious rock ballad. No matter how small the crowd, Paul captivates his audience with his soulful celebration of musical talent.

Being a musician is hardly Paul’s entire identity. He’s a father, a husband, a worker, and most importantly, just a simple man. He plays to play, and he wouldn’t tell you otherwise. I know Paul from occasional encounters and interviews, and was also his wife’s student at a local high school. He’s been writing songs and performing since he was a teenager, never letting the dream die. His music is simple in structure, but deeply complex in meaning, where his heart takes his guitar wherever it chooses to go. There is a purity within Paul that speaks out in his album No Time For Sleepin’, acknowledging the accomplishment of finally releasing original material, understanding the music itself is enough. Yes, Paul is a fantastic musician, his music speaks for himself. However, when I see Paul, and I see him perform, I see a soulful guitarist with a friendly attitude, searching not for stardom, but happiness. Paul represents what the art of music is truly about, bringing everyone back to a time of tranquility, where music culture was defined by the artist, not the industry as a whole.

This doesn’t mean Paul will be a local solo act forever though. On August 7th, Paul will be opening for country sensation Jerrod Niemann, and will also host a CD release party sometime in September, when Paul’s debut album, No Time For Sleepin’, will become available for purchase on iTunes. Paul can be found at https://www.tradebit.com, with information on music, shows, and other updates.

Music is nothing without soul, nothing without heart, and where it may be absent, Paul Shonk fills the void.
