I have always been captivated by the unique sound a guitar makes, whether acoustic or electric, or both. I remember classical guitar lessons taken in high school, and rock guitar classes taken in college. While, as a composer, I found the keyboard to be a more practical instrument, especially given my interest in minimalism and electronic meditations, I longed to create an album of guitar-based compositions, and I am proud to say, that moment has finally arrived. Let me state right from the outset that this album is both a labor of love and a heartfelt tribute to the guitarists whose music has both moved my spirit and provoked my creative muse - specifically, the work of William Ackerman, Michael Hedges, Pat Metheny, Al DiMeola, Stanley Jordan, John McLaughlin, Robert Fripp, Daniel Lanois, John Williams, Liona Boyd, John McGeoch and Bill Nelson. I also owe a huge debt of gratitude to my short-lived but enormously satisfying friendship with the late Jaco Pastorius: some might be surprised to learn that in many ways, Jaco mentored me as a composer and performer - when I lamented my lack of virtuosity or regretted not making it into Julliard, he was the first to tell me "F--- that! You can hear the music in your head, can''t you? Do you know how to express that and make your voice heard? Then you''re a f---ing musician, end of story." Even now, when plagued by the occasional nagging of my own insecurity, Jaco''s words ring in my ear, and slap me back to a humble assessment of my gift. I hope he is listening from the great beyond, as I know he would have been very supportive of this project, and I felt his approval shining down on me throughout the 20 plus years it took to finally make that wish come true - I humbly dedicate this album to you, brother. Godspeed.
