Details:
Diane Silva Haroutunian proudly presents her released solo debut CD album, entitled GAKAVIG - Educational and Traditional Songs for Children. Gakavig, or little partridge, is both the title of her album, as well as its flagship song, a traditional song originally composed by the great Armenian musician Gomidas.

Although Diane, like most Armenian Americans, grew up on traditional Armenian songs that she learned from her parents and grandparents, she found that teaching those same songs to her own children was quite a challenge. Being four generations removed from their ancestral lands, it was much easier for them to identify with songs from their popular culture rather than from their cultural heritage. Unlike her own sweet memories, they will not have the privilege of a grandparent telling them stories of growing up in Van''s mountains or Marash''s fields! Diane realized that the only way they would come to identify with Armenian songs was to blend the traditional with the modern realities of their lives.

Gakavig aims to educate Armenian children of the Diaspora by being simple and fun. This compilation of songs introduces children to the senses, the months of the year, Armenia''s national anthem as well as various animal songs like the caterpillar that magically turns into a beautiful butterfly, the busy bee, the noisy rooster, and the classic itsy bitsy spider. Children, along with their parents, can dance the haleh to the traditional Ha Nina and exercise to Loo Bee Loo, while learning body parts and distinguishing left from right. Your children, like Diane''s, will enjoy this CD and listen to it time and time again.

Diane composed several of the songs, arranged and produced this album. An accomplished musician, this singer-songwriter began her piano studies at the age of six. She then continued her education with a scholarship at the Music program at Montclair State University. For many years, Diane was the organist at the St. Vartanantz Armenian Church in Ridgefield, New Jersey, where she was directed by former choirmaster Armen Babamian.

In 1999, Diane and Nvair Beylerian formed 2Mayrer (2 mommies) and released their first CD together, 2Mayrer- Children''s Songs in Armenian. That album was nominated for Best Children''s CD album at the Armenian Music Awards in California.

As a talented and multi-faceted writer and performer, Diane has also collaborated with local artists on songs for adults, and performed in various Jazz clubs and female showcases in the New York metro area. "The Color in my Life", an original song co-written with Nancy Gannon, has received Honorable Mention from such nationally recognized institutions as the Billboard World Song Contest.
