Details:
Boris Dapoerka, a Russian philosopher who in his time had little or no influence, and as a consequence has been forgotten for quite a long time, survived until recently only in obscure backrooms of philosophical institutes. His thumbed manuscripts were rotting in archives, damaged by moths, mildew and (in Saint-Petersburg, where the library lies next to the zoo) an escaped camel.

In 2003, some young researchers went looking for the legacy of this interesting personality and his wayward ideas. They packed their bags and started hitchhiking. Their direction: Russia. What at the outset had been conceived as a scientific expedition, soon degenerated into an excessive orgy, when it turned out that the philosophical writings of Boris Dapoerka were somewhat less inspiring than the scientists had hoped for. One of the expedition members described them as: “a load of bullshit, without a doubt the fruit of an abundant use of the wodka they serve here – which is very good by the way.” After some days of vehement discussions, the researchers decided that it might be a good idea to end the expedition at this point. Their expedition report says: “if the present use of alcohol of the crew remains at the same level, it is not improbable that some of the crew members will soon be on the same road to madness as the object of their study, Boris Dapoerka.”

The disappearance of a goal for the expedition did raise some existential questions for the scientists, though. One cold winter evening, when the conversation, after a long elaboration on the economic situation in Edegem, finally came down on the subject of hobbies, the gentlemen concluded that they all were talented musicians. They promptly took their instruments and started playing. This went so well, that they decided to form an ensemble. A name wasn’t hard to find: Dapoerka was born!

In 2007, their first EP came out, dutifully entitled ‘Boris’. This almost entirely instrumental album dexterously slalomed between jazz, funk, disco and world music. The band enthusiastically played local and less local gigs and did fairly well at musical contests like Music Live. “What a difference this is, compared to the dull archives of Petrograd,” one of the horn players shouted, while hopping across the stage on one leg.

Two years later, in the summer of 2009, the band hit the recording studio again. The crew had changed somewhat, some singing was added to the music, and Boris Dapoerka watched the seven young musicians from his little cloud. And he saw it was good.

The new album is called ‘The Meaning of Amai’.
