Since their inception in October 2004, this modern jazz trio, based in Los Angeles, California, has exploded onto the jazz scene, gigging at top-notch clubs such as the Jazz Bakery, Catalina''s, and Lunaria. Not only has the band sold out LA''s top clubs, they have also been invited to perform in prestigious benefits, such as The Stroke Association''s yearly jazz party honoring jazz legend, Buddy Collette. Jake Bloch and Austin Peralta met in a middle school jazz band, where they were recommended by the band director to participate in Buddy Collette''s "JazzAmerica", founded in 1990. It was in JazzAmerica that they met Tigran Nersissian, and later formed The Hour Trio. The Hour Trio has performed with Kamasi Washington, Ryan Porter, Ralph "Buzzy" Jones, Scott Mayo, and Zane Musa.
"Inta'' Out", a self-produced musical voyage, is The Hour Trio''s first album, released in early 2005. As a trio, they self-produced "Inta'' Out" under the name ''Hour Records'', their own recently developed independent record label. Austin Peralta, the pianist (15), has already created a good reputation for himself as a musician, and is searching, through writing and performing, to find his own new music. Austin was awarded the Shelly Manne New Talent Award by the Los Angeles Jazz Society and Flip Manne in 2003, where he was honored alongside Quincy Jones. Austin has also performed with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra and Adam Rudolph''s Go: Organic Orchestra. In September of 2005, he recorded his debut album as a leader for Japanese record label "88''s" with Ron Carter (bass) and Billy Kilson (drums), which was released in February 2006. As well, Austin avidly composes original musical works, some of which are classical compositions.
Tigran Nersissian, the bassist (22), can be seen on almost any bandstand setting in Los Angeles from jazz to blues/rock to classical to avant-garde. Pre-Hour Trio, Tigran was a key member of the Don Allen trio, performing alongside pianists such as Gildo Mahones, Marty Harris, and Ray Manzarek. Apart from jazz, Tigran is heavily influenced by classical music, something that he practices constantly. He performs with the Santa Monica College Symphony Orchestra, and integrates his fantastic bowing technique into his jazz playing as well. In addition to playing in the Orchestra''s bass section, he debuted the virtuosic Dragonetti bass concerto with the Orchestra as a soloist. He will begin studying music and bass at University, as soon as his tenure with the Santa Monica College Symphony Orchestra has come to an end. Tigran, a native Armenian, recently had a special bass custom made from Romania to accommodate his being left-handed.
With a lifelong interest in anything that makes a percussive ting, Jake Bloch, the drummer (17), has located his musical brainwaves and is heart-set on jazz. Inspired to take up the drums by friend Peter Donald at age six, Jake has sat-in with pros such as Luther Hughes, Ken Peplowski, Rickey Woodard and Tamir Hendelman. Jake was also selected for the LA Jazz Society''s Bill Green Mentorship program two years in a row. In addition to drums, Jake is pursuing his interests in music theory, composing, and arranging. Jake has studied with drum master Jerry Kalaf for seven years, as well as Steve Barnes, and Carl Allen.
This group of young, prodigious, and innovative musicians is foreshadowing the future of jazz with their musical explorations and experimentations. The Hour Trio has already claimed a loyal following in Los Angeles, and is on the verge of widespread acclaim, displaying their unique talents through a progressive approach to jazz.
Ralph Miles Jones III ("Buzzy") has been active as an artist in the African-American improvisational tradition for over 25 years. He is a founding member of Eternal Wind with Yusef Lateef. In addition to his mastery of the saxes, the clarinets, the flutes, and the bassoon, Buzzy maintains a solid expertise of the Hichiriki, Ney, Wooden and Bamboo Flutes, Bamboo Trumpet, Shenei/Alghita, Turkish Bagpipe, Sipse, and various other exotic instruments. Buzzy holds a Bachelors of Ethno Musicology from UCLA, is a music/woodwind educator and composer, and is involved in "Winds of Change"-autophysiopsychic Music Research. "This is as engaging a sound as you''ll ever hear. His plaintive, haunting tone that hints of the Karma Sutra, The I Ching, Rig Veda, and conversations with Ogotemmeli." -Herb Boyd, Detroit Metro Times. He has performed with Pharoah Sanders, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, Yusef Lateef, Ella Fitzgerald, David Cherry, Kenny Cox, MC5, Sun Ra, and Norman Connors, among others, and has appeared on numerous recordings.
