Help me to celebrate my 80th year by listening to my music. To make it a little easier for you I will reduce the price to $5.00
This CD contains the music from my first and my last tapes, which were both made while I was still selling tapes out on the streets in New York City. The music reflects the changes made from the first tape, which was composed on a Casio calculator to the next tapes which were made using a keyboard.
I learned many things from my first compositions which developed by themselves as I went along. One thing I learned is that musical notes are very much like colors in a painting, in that they can vary over a wide range and still seem right, but as in a painting they really need a structure to become meaningful.
Normally this structure comes from rules associated with the harmonic system, in use for over four centuries now. Because of my rebellious and yes, lazy, nature, I was not able to use those rules. I had to look elsewhere for my structure, and I found it in a different place. The music I allowed pretty much to develop by itself, with very little conscious input from me, using sounds that pleased me. The structure I found lay in the intervals and in the spaces.
I found music to be very much like literature in that it consists of phrases, sentences, and paragraphs. I also found that you could take any random set of notes, and that by placing them in appropriate and natural positions in phrases and sentences, and by trying out various rhythms within these phrases, they could be made to form a completely unexpected melody, which was not only a surprise but better than anything I could have come up with consciously.
My Casio calculator, which made little beeps, had a function which allowed the intervals to be varied and then saved. At first the notes were really random and made little sense, but after several tries, the music began to jelly down into a melody. I was astounded.
You can demonstrate this property of music easily for yourself. Listen to any piece of music, but this time listen for the clusters. You will find that it indeed does separate out into sentences, almost as if there were actually commas and periods there.
After my first tape, I felt that the time had come to invest my money in a real midi keybord, and I regretfully left my Casios behind.
To make this CD a little more interesting, I have taken the music from both tapes and changed the order around. I have also separated the movements from the Bassoon Trio, the Flute Duet, and the Peaceful Journey, and mixed them in with the rest of the music.
The Trio For Strings, and the two Violin and cello pieces all have the same notes, played forward, played backward, and played both backward and forward at intervals of five measures.
The picture on the CD is an idealized portrait of me with my mouth open so as to be able to fit on the CD.
