I started drumming on books when I was four or five years old, putting the books on the bed and listening to the radio while playing along. And at that time I was playing to such sensations as Stevie Wonder, The Hawkins Family, Earth, Wind & Fire, and the Spinners.

Today, with those early influences still imbuing my work, I remember those first lessons as being instrumental in preparing me for the release of, “Slow Walkin’ = Smooth Talkin’”. Seventeen original and sociable jazz tracks were laid down at Latter Rain Production Co. in Jacksonville, NC. They gave me timing. And timing is everything when you’re playing drums.

However, it wouldn’t be until early 2005 that my time for this solo effort would come. Although I debuted at age 11, playing for my church and assimilating the gospel music would remain a lifelong influence in my life.

I''d wake up in the middle of the night and just get on my bass guitar and play what I heard. It’s hard writing music, but it’s a gift. And it’s a gift I''ve been waiting for years to share.

A friend and fellow musician, Tim Rainer, who plays saxophone, bass and add vocals on this project and coincidentally owns Latter Rain Productions, helped bring the wait to a successful end.

Music is like a conversation. You give each musician time to speak. When you have communication, it sounds good.

Fleshed out as I intertwined on vocals and percussion, Rainer on sax, bass and vocals, Steve Spraggins on keyboard, Shaun Hargett (my nephew) on bass, Tony Jones on lead guitar and Gabriel Rainer on sax, “Slow Walkin’” is a solid effort from a jazz man making initial tracks toward my Nirvana.

One of my aspirations is to play at the Blue Note, the legendary jazz club on West Third Street in Manhattan. When I got back after a birthday visit there in March, I said, I can do this....
