Mission Statement
Han Shot First openly acknowledges that Nirvana revived rock and roll in the early 90''s, and for that we are grateful. However, Kurt and Co. left out all of the fun and butt shaking. Ergo, our Mission Statement:
First and foremost, we are a rock and roll band.
We resolve to make Rockin'' Out fun again. No angst.
We are resolved to help you Get Your Ya-Ya''s Out
We adhere to "More Fuckin'' Less Mopin''."
We believe that rock and roll can make you think, dance and be happy all at the same time.
We believe that rock and roll can and will save the world.
We are resolved to return rock and roll to the proper authorities: You, the butt shakers, the orphaned children of classic rock.

Han Shot First
A long time ago, in a place far, far away:
Two forces met in an epic struggle of Awesome vs. Kick Ass.
The battle raged for months.
From the destruction they wrought upon that tiny Low Country Island, a band was born.
The rest is history.
CHAPTER ONE: Island to Island
Jamey McGaugh and Matthew Rankin met each other in January of 1998. They were performing together in a production of The Importance of Being Earnest at the Hilton Head Playhouse. A love of rock-n-roll, the beach, pro football, The Tiki Hut, and Pillsbury cinnamon rolls created a crazy glue bond between the two. After months of parties, sun, music, beer, and parties, it was decided that Hilton Head was nice, but it just didn''t have enough concrete or snow for anyone''s liking. Jamey, always the thinker, actually convinced Matt that the island of Manhattan was just as lovely and tropical as Hilton Head Island: "If you replace every grain of sand with an unhappy mid-level investment banker, and all the water with other people''s urine, it''s basically the same place!" Well, ''nuff said! So, they loaded up the truck and they moved to NYC: Washington Heights that is, bo-degas and burned out cars. Clan Rankin moved into Jamey''s apartment in March of 1999, and many adventures followed, but that, friends, is a story for another time and another website.
CHAPTER TWO: MAKING THE BAND
In the beginning they were actors, and that was good. They worked as actors, and that was very good. But Matt and Jamey soon grew tired of eating from the Tree of Rejection, and decided to form a band. With their good friend Ben Arvan, they started writing together, and eventually performed under the name The Living Room Kings. The Living Room Kings burned brightly, but briefly. (Don''t fret children, Ben remains one of our closest friends.) Matt soon invited Kirk White, an old UNC-G buddy, to come in and play lead guitar on what were becoming the first songs for the new band. Bryan Gardenaur was brought in to play drums and the first incarnation of Han Shot First was in place. The guys spent that spring and summer rehearsing, recording and molding songs and a sound that were both classic and unique. Han Shot First made their debut at the Slipper Room in NYC in September of 2002 as special musical guests for The Spence Cook Show. The band started playing around the city on a regular basis, and fans started to answer the band''s plea to ''HELP US ROCK YOU''. Kenny''s Castaways was packed on April 28th, 2003, for a Halt Records industry showcase, a mere 6 months after the band''s debut.
Over the next three months the band exploded, and not in the MTV way. In the summer, Kirk decided to accept a teaching job in Savannah, GA, and Bryan decided Nashville was a better city for him and his wife. Matt and Jamey respected their decisions and wished them both well. It was a sad day for Han Shot First and it''s fans. Darkness fell over the land.
CHAPTER THREE: RE-MAKING THE BAND
Months passed and rumors began to circulate that Han Shot First was dead. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Matt and Jamey were simply writing new songs. Determined to rock again the guys went in search of a drummer to flesh out the new tunes, and a friend recommended Mike Mattice. It was a perfect fit. After six very long rock-free months, the second incarnation of Han Shot First hit the stage of the famous Le Bar Bat in New York City at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 17th, 2003. Good friend and leader of his own band, Bob D''Haene sat in with the band on guitar. Word on the street is that HSF rocked Le Bar Bat so hard that night they had to close down. Bob stuck around for the next coupla gigs and is now somewhat of a permanent fixture in the line-up. But HSF wasn’t done with the re-vamp yet! Tired of trying to sing with a 25 lb. Albatross-like 5 string Epiphone strapped to his neck, Jamey thought another band member was needed. Armed with a 4 string Fender, a strong will, and a funny accent, Australia native (and pOparOxi refugee) Amanda Donnelly joined up with the band to add a little more of the funk to this rock''n''roll stew. NOW things were really cookin''. Comparisons to "Exile" era Stones were coming from every direction, after every show. But something still wasn’t quite right. Something was still missing: Keyboards.
CHAPTER FOUR: A NEW HOPE
Matt and Jamey went to audition keyboardist Dan Siegler at his production studio in the Village. Everything went well. The guy CERTAINLY had the chops, was a nice fella, and seemed to enjoy the material. But then he sealed the deal. When Dan mentioned that he really enjoyed the keyboard styles of Art "Poppa Funk" Neville and Little Feat''s Bill Payne, Matt''s head nearly split in two, he was grinning so broadly. Dan-Dan The Keyboard Man joined the circus in Fall of ''05, and with shows at The Delancey, Arlene''s Grocery, Sin-E, and Crash Mansion, it''s clear the band is moving in a good direction.
The rest of this rock and roll saga has yet to be written, but there is a moral to this tale:
You can''t stop the rock.
