Details:
Ten records in eight years. 100 songs in one year. Who exactly is Hallelujah Boy?

Hallelujah Boy began as a one man project seven years ago for JB Whittenburg, an elementary school reading teacher in his other life. The years 1998-2000 featured explorations into the world of lo-fi, four-track home recording, with sounds alternating between loud, buzzing guitars and quiet acoustic guitars and pianos. The following two years saw a gradual refinement of the HB sound, with the landmark recordings The Fountain of Youth and the masterful two-disc Diamond Fields of Meade. By the end of 2003, the four-track had been retired, and the need to emerge from the bedroom recording studio began to increase.

A short mini-tour developed in 2004 to support the simultaneous release of two full-length recordings (the acoustic Kind of Revolution and the electronic Music the Machines Make), plus two other EPs of old and new material. Frustrated by the limitations of the one-man live show, HB sought out other musicians to play with, before finally hooking up in 2005 with local Norfolk, Virginia luminaries Rich Patt on drums and Jeff Lomanno on bass. Multi-instrumentalist Greg Lewis (ex-Magnagem) was added to the lineup in late 2005.

So, to return to the original question: Who is Hallelujah Boy? A better question to answer now would be: What is Hallelujah Boy? Primarily, Hallelujah Boy is all about great songs. Whether ripping through anthemic rock reminiscent of Guided by Voices or Superchunk, or in quieter, more acoustic settings (a la Neil Young or Elliott Smith), the focus is first and foremost on great songs. And, by the way, there are plenty of songs - in fact 100 new songs that will be written and recorded this year alone (check out the progress at https://www.tradebit.com). Most recently, the band has had the good fortune to have opportunities to play some of these songs alongside national touring acts like Wilderness, Eagle Seagull, Look Mexico, Extra Blue Kind, and Parts and Labor.

On May 30th, Transaction Records will release their brand new record, entitled Noise and Silence. It captures the sound of a new chapter in the Hallelujah Boy legacy - a dynamic new band, forging a new sound, even featuring a string quartet on 3 of the songs! A summer tour to support the record begins in late June; look for an additional HB retrospective, Goodbye to the Goodbye Girls: 1998-2004, to be available at the shows.
