Loyda was born and raised in the tropical island of the Dominican Republic. She was born in a Christian home to dedicated & hard working pastors and evangelists. Being raised in a low-income family, Loyda grew up in a very creative & faith rich environment. Being the oldest of six girls, Loyda has always had a take-charge attitude, and learned to make the best of every situation.
Loyda released her first Spanish recording in 1983, at the early age of 14, titled "Para Tu Gloria". After great success, she released her second recording in 1984, titled "Volvera". She ministered in many different venues such as: churches, conferences, camps, evangelistic crusades (with evangelists Rolando Pichardo and Luis Palau) and others.
Soon after, her family moved to South Florida in the USA. With only a few months of the American language and culture under her belt, Loyda headed to Toccoa Falls College to study music and Bible. She graduated in 1990 with a double major in Music Performance and Music Composition.
After graduating from Toccoa, Loyda became part of Carpenter''s Tools International (CTI), a missionary music-traveling group. She toured in all of the major cities of the US, India, Indonesia, Europe, South America and the Caribbean. Thanks to CTI, Loyda met her husband Garth Hjelte.
After their tour with CTI, they married and moved to Minnesota where they recorded "Blessed are Those Who Suffer".
Loyda has devoted her time to teaching music to children and participating in numerous church worship groups and music activities.
Today, she is a mother of three wonderful children, wife, composer & singer. And in her spare time, writes the music that she hears God playing in the night.
