PRE-HISTORY:
In 1986, Ben "Captain Rimmer" Phillipps, Tom Lingner, and Willie "Bill" Wisely, joined with John Huss to form Musical Euthanasia. The group played one concert at Spring Chicken at the Coop at Beloit College and promptly disbanded.

HISTORY:
In 1990, John Huss and Tim Heffernan met at an open mic at Jimmy''s Woodlawn Tap in Chicago. Tim liked John''s songs, and offered to record them on a four-track recorder in his basement "studio." Tim and a couple of friends, Steve Unzicker and Chris Funk, had formed a band called the Stoats and John ended up joining the group as well. For a couple of years they played around Chicago and one show at Simon''s Rock College in Massachusetts. Eventually, Tim moved back to Massachusetts, and the band broke up.

Those early tapes made their way into the hands of Boston producer Pete Weiss via Huss'' Beloit College friend, Carter Smith. Pete expressed an interest in recording Huss at his studio in Boston, so Huss drove across the country and gathered together Tim Heffernan and two of his former bandmates, Matt Swift and Rob Rudin, from Simon''s Rock legends 4 Out of Five Dentists. He also enlisted the help of Treat Her Right harmonica player Jim Fitting. Over the course of a long weekend in the winter of 1991, this motley ensemble banged out a bunch of songs in Pete Weiss'' Zippah studios. The resulting tracks were released on a cassette called Folk ''n'' Roll.

Over the course of the next few years, Huss continued to travel to Boston to work with Pete Weiss in the Zippah studio. Collaborators on these recordings included 7 Zark 7 and Carolyn Klumpp Jr. from the ''Bald Guys, Pete himself, and Keith Grady of the Lotus Eaters. The best tracks from the Folk ''n'' Roll sessions were combined with the best tracks from these later sessions and released as a cassette, Pie Aren''t Squared, with cover design by Steve Kopka.
