Fourteen freshly recorded titles, crafted throughout the last year of the century by the mighty force of THE VALIDATORS make this CD album a sure fire hit for the next one. Stepping away from the ham-fisted four-track efforts of previous MJ HIBBETT output, the boys from the band are sure that these recordings will enlighten and surprise one and all!
The programme gets off to a rip-roaring start with live favourite THE BLACK HAIR AND GLASSES BRIGADE, before hitting its stride with the monumental orchestral wing-ding that is PAYDAY IS THE BEST DAY. Next we find the whole band united on what is perhaps the first true classic of the set, STOP LOOK AND LISTEN. You''ll need to stop, look and listen a few times yourself to hear the cunning constructional contrivances of this number, but we know it''ll be worth the wait!
On the first slower number, WHERE IS MY TORCH?, Rob (Fleay, also of UK hitmakers White Town and up and coming emo-core joytown Frankie Machine) and Tom (McClure, currently with the LSO) duet beautifully on trumpet and violin, respectively, while BORN WITH THE CENTURY marks the first recorded output of THE VALIDATORS. Already released as a single, the boys felt this was worthy of inclusion on the album, so that more people would be able to wonder at it''s lyrical dexterity. The sombre mood is dispelled immediately by HEY HEY 16K, another rocking hit that''s already gained appreciation from the computer fraternity.
During the sessions for this album, MJ recorded several songs acoustically, and the first of these comes in the form of our title track SAY IT WITH WORDS, where he is accompanied by Rob again on trumpet. The rest of the band return for the meditation on human endeavor (and shagging!) that is IF YOU''RE TOO TURNED ON, then carry on in a reflective mood with WHERE DO ALL THE WOMEN GO TO? where Ollie (Wright, of British Indie skyscrapers Lazer Guided) especially gets to flex his bass muscles. He''s there again on THE SATURDAY LUNCHTIME WRESTLERS, where the evils of Thatcherism are tackled, before the platter hits its darkest section in CAROL AND THE MANDOLIN. Here we find Tom again duetting, this time with Neil (Brown, from sadly departed space-rock hopes John Sims) on the eerie synth. It''s a chilling track around a chilling subject.
After that, there''s just time for another delicate acoustic number, WOULD IF I COULD, before the band rock out again with THE PEBBLE AND THE BOULDER. Watch out for the mighty drums of Tim (Pattison, of the Godlike Prolapse) on this one, they''re sure to knock your ears out! After all the excitement, the band enlist THE DURHAM OX SINGERS one last time for the final track, WINGS OF FIRE, sure to be a funereal favourite for years to come. As the song fades away there''s just time for a short reprise of PAYDAY IS THE BEST DAY, before you can hit that button and flip right back to the start again, for another listen to SAY IT WITH WORDS.
