Details:
This CD reflects the top-notch quality of live performances at the Headlands. The featured combo is led by Kent Glenn, one of the swingingest pianists and composers to come down the line. Kent has been a working jazz musician for 40 years, playing with such luminaries as Herb Geller, Sonny Stitt, King Pleasure, Dave Pike, Stephanie Hayes and Walter Benton. He moved to the North Coast in 1986 and began a 6-year stint at the legendary Old Coast Hotel. During this time he also coached the Mendocino High School Band and maintained his own performing jazz workshop, creating a ninety-minute suite for 14 pieces for the Mendocino Coast Jazz Society''s Jazz On The Lawn series. He has two LPs under his own name; "Good For The Garden" and "Lawn Party" (an LP with the awesome Los Angeles bass player Putter Smith). He also has two CDs with the great Portland bassist Ed Bennett. Although he began working on the east coast four years ago, he keeps on coming home to the Headlands and invigorating the local jazz scene. Kent is proud to participate in the debut album of these other talented jazz musicians. On the first set, all originals, he fronts a quintet of Headlands headliners with Pete on bass and San Franciscan Roger Phelps on drums. Roger was a high school associate of Rufus Reid, Vince Lateano and Mel Martin, and has been Kent''s jazz colleague for over 30 years. Dig his lovely restraint on the ballads, especially "A Pointles Point" ad "Seasonal Closures". Completing the combo are Diane Sallinen, third-generation north coast native and astonishing alto sax player; and Bob Ayers, trumpeter and long-time Musical Director at Mendocino High School. This is a knockout band playing gorgeous compositions. Listen once and you''ll listen again and again. The second set features the leadership and original compositions of local pianist and Headlands regular Richard Cooper. As Pete Gealey enthusiastically puts it, "Richard''s a tremendous pianist and can really play a wide range of styles. He just keeps on entertaining our Friday night crowd here". Pete once again swings on bass and the trio is rounded out by Jimmy Gallagher, a high school student with a terrific instinct and facility on drums.

Altogether, this is a wonderful, truly swinging CD. It delivers the best of the Headlands musicians and the lively, satisfying atmosphere of the café itself.
