In 1997, Erratic Fool was born out of the ashes of Costa Nikou, https://www.tradebit.come and A.J. Sedlak''s former band, Hindenburg. The band came to be after Costa and A.J. began collaborating on songs. https://www.tradebit.come and Costa were collaborating on songs at the same time. One thing lead to another and the trio started getting together, playing old Hindenburg classics and working on the new collaborations.
Before they even had a name, A.J. booked the band a show at The Hub Cellar at Penn State University where A.J. was attending college. Leading up to this show, the three traded e-mails back and forth on what the name of the band should be. Costa recommended the name "Cellaratic Fool", because they always either practiced in the cellar or that attic. They wised up and shortened it to "Erratic Fool" and the name stuck.
Erratic Fool kept writing and tried to rehearse whenever they could. They booked another show up at Penn State University and then started booking some shows in Pittsburgh. In the meantime, https://www.tradebit.come created the now famous EF "Sun Logo" that adorned his bass drum for years and was always present on merchandise, albums, the free stickers, and the spare tire cover on Costa''s Grand Vitara.
When EF started booking around Pittsburgh, they started off at the always trusty Bloomfield Bridge Tavern and then landed themselves back at the Yadco Music Summer Festival which they had performed at the summer before as Hindenburg. Luckily for EF, the soundman had a tape recorded set up to his sound board for recording. The recording EF recieved was good enough to make limited edition Live cd''s and use them as demos for their press kits. This cd (and there is 1 extra floating around) was titled, Rising Sun.
After playing a few shows at Moondog''s and Coolpepper''s Hot House, EF was invited to participate in a battle of the bands at C.J.''s Clubhouse in Indianola, PA. Once the band arrived, they realized that they were in a 20 band competition and 17 of them bands were metal bands. While at this show, EF got a business card for a recording studio, made the phone call a few weeks later and were set to record.
The day before Erratic Fool was set to go into the studio, https://www.tradebit.come broke his right hand. This made for an even more adventurous experience. The band got the to studio, met with the engineer, co-producer and owner, Angelo Morreale. https://www.tradebit.come set up his drums, the band got ready and they made it through 4 songs that day. The orignal plan was to include 10 songs on the cd. The end product was 7 songs. Regardless, the band had their first cd. With their new cd, they decided that, Fools In The Attic was an appropriate name and A.J. Sedlak provided the artwork.
In the back to school issue of The Rock N Roll Reporter in 1998, (which was a local music magazine in Pittsburgh before it folded in the early 2000''s) ran a spotlight article/blurb on the band.
Starting off 1999, the band was on hiatus. Not rehearsing as much as they wanted and not promoting their new cd as much as they should have, EF was taking a small break. EF landed a show at The Next Decade in Oakland. This would be the last show with A.J. Sedlak as EF''s bass player. The band had another show scheduled a week or 2 down the road and A.J. cancelled. Afterwards, A.J. decided to quit to give himself more time to concentrate on his school needs and personal life and give EF more time to play shows, write songs and do the things they wanted. So, https://www.tradebit.come and Costa Nikou took off for the first time having to find a replacement, even hitting all time lows such as playing an open stage at The Whitehawk Cafe in Penn Hills as a duo (and they didn''t even do it acoustically). Luckily for them, this wasn''t going to have to last.
Costa visited Yadco Music and found out they just had a bass player competition. Costa got the phone numbers of the 1st and 2nd place winners. The 1st place winner came over first. With long hair, a beach bum, grass cutter vibe and tons of natural talent, the first place winner - Mike Griska would be come Erratic Fool''s new bass player that night.
The mood around the band was at it''s all time high. They were churning out new song after new song, messing with cover songs and playing out more than they had been. Their first 2 shows with Mike Griska was at Pluto''s in the Strip District and Graffiti in Oakland. The Graffiti show was a disaster or as https://www.tradebit.come says, he has no recollection of the show after he put his foot through his bass drum 3 songs into their set. EF continued playing shows throughout 1999, even "almost" getting a shot to open for their favorite local band Sho''Nuff. Costa cancelled plans to visit his girlfriend in North Carolina for this cause. The band gets there, Sho''Nuff is hanging out at the loading door and told them that the promoter (Tim Gaber of The Buzz Poets) forgot to hire a sound man and the show wasn''t going to happen. What was suppose to be their greatest moment, turned out to be their biggest disapointment.
The year 2000 comes and civilization continues to exist, so EF assumed it would be perfect time to record a follow up cd to Fools In The Attic. They decided to set up shop at Mike''s house, rent recording equipment and do the entire cd themselves. They were able to put 74 minutes worth of music on the cd and that is what they did, turning out a 15 song CD. Erratic Fool continued to perform throughout 2000 while they tried to decide on an album name. "Erratica" was the first name offering. The second offering from Mike Griska was "Ekim Gots Pockets" which was explained to them to be "Mike has groove". Neither of these names stuck with the band. 2000 started off recording a CD and 2000 ended without a new CD.
2001, proved to be an interesting year, playing shows here and there, going through a train wreck of a deal with a start up management guy, Erratic Fool finally released their 2nd studio LP, Fun With Heavy Balloons. Costa Nikou provided the artwork, a new website design followed and the band was ready to promote. They sent their CD to numerous radio stations, anywhere and everywhere to be reviewed, only to get one review out of the Daily News in McKeesport.
2002 started off slowly but built towards it''s end. Hitting spots such as Market Square, playing outside of PNC Park, playing at Nick''s Fat City etc... Erratic Fool seemed to be on it''s way up. They were slowly starting to feel a little momentum even if they couldn''t obtain a stable following. Then the band gets rocked with an e-mail from Mike Griska announcing he was leaving the band. This seemed to take the life out of everyone. https://www.tradebit.come and Costa Nikou decided they were going to continue going, even throwing a going away show for Mike. They didn''t know that at the time, Mike was playing with another band. Regardless of all that, another bass player search was on.
Costa and https://www.tradebit.come tried out a few bass players and finally found someone who was a good fit for their music and didn''t come to try out in jogging pants and a tight 1983 https://www.tradebit.comis Cardinals jersey or someone who smelled like a mechanics shop. Matt Cronin was the new guy, and he became EF''s new bass player in December 2002, a few days after Mike Griska''s final show with Erratic Fool.
After the holidays, the new lineup, started rehearsing, fitting Matt in with the vast catalog of EF songs and cover songs. EF playeed their first show with Matt Cronin as an opener at Casa D''Ice in North Versailles. The previous summer of 2002, https://www.tradebit.come took over booking for the band and had his girlfriend assist him as manager and basically the one who made the phone calls and deals. This teamwork worked out great as EF was suddenly playing shows everywhere they wanted and at one point played 4 shows in one week. By the summer of 2003, the wear and tear starting taking it''s toll on the band. Even though the shows were coming alot easier, the band was still unable to get that faithful following they always wanted and the politics of everything started taking their toll. The band took a break from playing, which also coincided with https://www.tradebit.come having his hands tied moving into a new house. In 2004, Erratic Fool started writing some new songs with Matt Cronin, with plans of recording a 3rd CD. The band played their 1st and only show of the year at The Underground at Carnegie Mellon University. It marked the first time EF ever played a full 2 hour plus show without taking a break. Little did they realize, that this was perhaps going to be the final show that Erratic Fool were to play. Even if it is, it is fitting that they came full circle playing their first show at an underground, all ages, univeristy venue and ending at an underground, all ages, university venue.
Erratic Fool decided to take another stab at home recording. This time Costa had the room and setup and purchased all of the equipment. This time they were to make the CD they always wanted. By summer of 2004 all of the tracks for the new CD were finished. Before this, Matt Cronin got a job offer in the Washington D.C. area at George Mason University. Costa and his wife Tara also recieved news in 2004 that they were to have twin boys in October. Former bass player A.J. Sedlak and his wife had a baby boy in 2004 and https://www.tradebit.come and his girlfriend Deana found out that they were going to have a baby girl in March 2005. My how things change. It became inevitable that the end of Erratic Fool was about to occur.
As 2005 has come to its midway point, EF has a finished cd named Setting Sun that awaits return from the replicators. Since the first CD was called Rising Sun, naming the final one Setting Sun finalizes a great chapter. Besides the upcoming release of the new CD, there are talks about Costa Nikou and https://www.tradebit.come resurrecting Erratic Fool, putting themselves back in the familiar position of finding a new bass player to promote the newest and latest EF cd.
