Details:
What is a bio but an over-glamorized self-exalting pseudo-history of a band? Basically, bios are typically meaningless exercises in hyperbole. And as our number of records released continues to grow (5) and our number of shows played exceeds what we ever thought we could do (500+), talking about the experience becomes impossible in short bio form. Adding to this the fact that our creation story is quite long, complicated, and over-told the bio writing experience becomes an unwanted one. What you need to know about engaged can be found in our mission statement, everything else is insignificant. You could wake to find tomorrow morning cold, and in the same way you could wake to find that engaged is no longer the definitive two man acoustic screamfest, but that we have evolved into a bluegrass group. Engaged is defined by purpose, not product. We are not special or glamorous; we are not ‘bio’ material.

To the church:

Imagine a world where hungry people are overlooked. Imagine a worldwide epidemic that kills insatiably and appears unstoppable. Imagine victims of this catastrophe being overlooked and even shunned. Imagine a world overridden by war and murder. Imagine genocide on the unborn. Imagine the same people who loathe the later supporting the former. Imagine a world that tells the homeless to get off the streets and then asks them to leave their buildings. Imagine a world where good is seen in forfeiting one’s soul to gain possessions. Imagine a world that opposes the humble and gives grace to the proud. Imagine a world that returns a scorn for a scorn.
Now imagine a church that lives to undo this world.
Be quickened lady, bride of the Great Groom, rise and move. Fight for and not against. Let the radiance of your betrothed shine in your face. Love one another without hesitation and without expectation. Never forget your complete inability to fix yourself when you consider trying to fix another. Never forget the eyes your Groom laid on you when you set your eyes on another. Never forget His eyes.

To the world:

We are without merit. This is the forgotten pillar of the gospel. God approaches us, while we are dead in devotion to self, and by His merit, delivers us from certain destruction. There is joy in this acknowledgement. We lack what it takes to make it on our own. What a relief. When we were very young, we were dependant on our parents fully. If they didn’t feed us, we wouldn’t be alive to read this. And there is a certain glee babies possess that follows from the freedom of being a dependant. When we were yet still young, our parents paid our way to food and shelter, and there is a carefree attitude associated with adolescence directly related to this freedom of dependence. Most people responsible for their own mortgage would tell you they would gladly transfer that responsibility. The joy of being unable to sustain ourselves apart from help is there both to reflect and point to the gospel. Jesus invites us to exchange the grind of self-provision for the assurance of provision from God. He came to experience a true grind, living love in a world of hate, being betrayed by a friend, being denied by several others, and dying a criminals death. But it wasn’t for self-provision, it was for mass provision, He came with a gift, a gift so important that He had to get up and leave that tomb, where death tried to entrap Him, and hand deliver His gift. It is a gift still necessary and powerful to us today, the gift of ultimate provision. The greatest provision God offers us is life abundantly in a love relationship with Him. It cannot be attained through hard work and determination, is must be received. And to receive it, no greatness is required of us. We are given this gift freely for the price was paid by Christ Jesus, all that has been left to us is receiving this gift with open arms. And so rejoice for we are without merit, but, even more so, we, in Christ, are without need of merit.
