Details:
Roy Davis’ blend of alt-country, roots rock and folk will make your head spin. Likened to that of Whiskeytown, Damien Rice, and Wilco, a listen to his debut album ‘Grey Town’ or an evening at one of his shows is likely to place listeners on an emotional trampoline as he croons broken-hearted ballads and edgy small town rock. The self-described manic songwriter grew up a 30 minute drive from the nearest store in Montville, ME. Though he now resides in the more urban Portland, ME, the 21 year old country rock troubadour still retains the focus on simplicity and honesty that is so often associated with a life of dirt roads and empty whiskey bottles. He is fresh to the spotlight with his debut album, but Roy Davis has been kicking around Portland for longer than he cares to admit, writing and paying his rent. True to his roots, Davis cites the Stones, Ryan Adams, Drive-By Truckers and the Nirvana as major influences. “I think I get way more connected to an album, or an artist, than the average person. When I listen to a great song, or a song that is relevant to my life, it kills me. It can throw me into a depressed state, or bring me out of one, or bring back a memory in my life that changes the way I live or how I act. It’s sick, it really is, but that’s how I know that music is what I love and what I’ll be doing for the rest of my life, whether I succeed at it, or just die in an alley somewhere, singing ‘Hallelujah’ to myself.” It is this kind of passion that is evident in his music and that has drawn crowds to his New England shows and will continue to do so, whether it’s in support of his first or his tenth album.
