This CD is the fifth as a leader by Oslo based British jazz pianist/keyboadist Roy Powell and marks his return to jazz-rock fusion https://www.tradebit.com trio features the vintage sound of Fender Rhodes electric piano,together with Jazz/Rock/Funk fusion bass and drums. The CD concept includes a varied soundscape of warm grooving electric fusion and lesser used acoustic instruments such as acoustic bass guitar, melodica with a tinge of latin etc. Keyboardist Powell often uses three or more keyboard instruments simultaneously!Oh yeh! and he even plays trumpet on one track!
Roy Powell studied piano and avant-garde composition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester England before defecting to jazz. He first came to prominence in 1994 with his debut recording A Big Sky which was hailed as “a real bench mark in British contemporary electric jazz” by Jazz on CD He then emigrated to Oslo, Norway where he collaborated on an album of free improvised music – Holus which was described as “ an outstanding success” by Jazz journal International. His next release as a leader- North by Northwest featuring Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen has also been a critical success as well as being selected as Best Jazz CD of 2001 by https://www.tradebit.com. Solace which was released in 2003 received lavish praise including 4 stars in Downbeat. His piece Bow Out has been performed by Oakland, Richmond, Cincinnati and Florida ballet companies and has had performances all over the globe from Japan, Australia, and USA to Europe and Scandinavia. His recordings have appeared in the Gramophone Jazz Good CD guide, Gramophone Classical Good CD guide, the Lord Discography, The new Grove Dictionary of Jazz as well as jazz magazines in Europe and the US and radio shows in the UK, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Holland Scandinavia and the US.
Per Mathisen - electric/acoustic bass studied bass at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, in Boston, USA. And has since performed with International jazz artists such as Geri Allen, Adam Nussbaum, Teri Lyne Carrington, Gary Thomas, Gary Husband, Ralph Peterson, Ngyuen Le, Bill Bruford, Jon Christensen, Hiram Bullock, Clare Fischer, George Garzone, Terje Rypdal, Marilyn https://www.tradebit.com has also toured in Sweden, Denmark, England, Ireland, Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Austria. Ivan Makedonov – Drums /Percussion born in Bourgas – Bulgaria. Ivan studied classical piano and Orchestral Percussion at Bourgas Music School and in addition has taken master classes with Dave Weckl and Erik Smith. Ivan has played drums for 10 years now and has performed with some of Norway’s most important musicians such as Olga Konkova, Per Mathisen, Ole Mathisen, Frode Kjekstad, Frode Berg, Even Andersen, Håkon Graf, Frode Kjestad, Håvard Fossum, Jens Fossum, Stig Wigestrand, Karin Krog, Vidar Busk, Wayne Brasel, Chris Washburne, Erik Johannessen, Michael Bloch, Lars Endrerud, Steffen Nikolaisen, Asker Big Band, to name a few.
