If you want to know about me, listen to my songs and there I am. So, I will give you some info that you might not be able to pick up from my lyrics. I grew up listening to AM radio – Elvis, the Everly Brothers and Ricky Nelson. I would say that they all still have an influence on my music today. My older brother exhibited the greatest musical talent in my family. We could only afford one set of lessons in my family. My brother got the lessons, and I got my cousin’s ukulele that she didn’t want any more. I taught myself to play Peter, Paul and Mary songs that I heard on the radio. Eventually, I went to work and got the money together to buy a guitar. I played Neil Diamond and Kenny Rogers. In college, I learned James Taylor, Carole King, Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens, Crosby, Stills and Nash and Neil Young tunes. I played at parties and I played out some.

I ran into a girl (Stefani) that I knew from high school while playing a gig at a Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. We eventually got together and we have been married for 32 years. Although I continued to play through the years, I decided that it was not practical to pursue music, and I pursued a career and started a family. I didn’t start writing my own songs until about 5 years ago, inspired by the music of Marc Cohn, Patti Griffin, Buddy Miller, and always by Gordon Lightfoot. With all of the great music out there, I guess I always thought, “Who am I to write a song? Surely it will just sound like something already written.” It all changed when my wife wanted, in fact she demanded, a song for her birthday. Somehow, she knew that there was music in me, just waiting to come out. The result was Salt Water (title cut of my CD). It was a big hit with my wife, so I played it out at gigs.

People approached me to buy my CD. Didn’t have one. I wrote a song for my mother’s 80th birthday, mostly on the plane on the way there (Ballad of Sarah). People at the party were crying and asking for a recording. Didn’t have one. I began to think that I might have some talent, so I kept writing. My friend Larry got me to start playing gigs again at about the same time as I started writing songs. At first, it was just me and Larry, but eventually, we got a five-piece band together and were playing some of my songs at gigs. Just hanging around Larry will make you a better guitar player. Somehow, the more you learn about playing, the more you play, and the more tools that you have for composing an interesting tune.

Now I have recorded my first CD in Nashville (Salt Water), a dream come true. Some of my friends and relations thought that I was having a mid-life crisis. Stefani knew better. I don’t think that anyone who hears Salt Water will think that it was some sort of misguided ego trip. I sent a copy to all of my friends and relatives to shut them up. I am really proud of my music and of the Salt Water project. Already started writing songs for the next CD. Stay tuned
