A fine second effort from Philadelphia, the EP offers a Pavement-like feel that will grow on you.
The followup to the group's ten-song self-titled debut, the five-song EP is an alt-pop pastiche redolent of XTC and Big Star meets The Dictators... Like the geographical condition from which it derives its name, the band is dry and flat, but wry. Clearly, Alkali Flats was paying attention in its formative years to college radio, the home of that style.
Starting slowly with a somewhat clunky, "The Visitor," the band gains momentum on "Queen for a Day" and "No Cylinders Are Firing," the third and fourth tracks that bring their pop leanings sharply into focus. Both will definitely be crowd pleasers in a live setting.
This band will definitely move some units in its touring base, and its songwriting strength indicates potential to move beyond regional acclaim. The first 10,000 units are the toughest, but Alkali Flats should definitely breeze past that mark.
