The University of Colorado at Boulder''s Jazz Ensemble I is celebrating a year of outstanding achievements by releasing a new recording titled "CU ''Round Midnight." The full-length compact disc features an exciting range of contemporary music for large jazz ensemble featuring selections from master composer, arranger and pianist Jim McNeely. McNeely performs with the band on two of the tracks. In addition to the McNeely''s five compositions included here, pieces by Maria Schneider, Matt Catingub, Dan Gailey and John Clayon complete the disc. This is the ensemble''s third CD release following "Waking Up the Flatirons" in 1998 and "Boulder Buff: A CU Tribute to Glenn Miller" in 2001.
"The disc showcases the band''s versatility through some really challenging literature," says Director of Jazz Studies and Jazz Ensemble I Director Dr. John Davis. "Being able to include the playing and music of Jim McNeely on the CD was a great bonus. And, most of the selections were recorded live in concert!"
CU JAZZ ENSEMBLE I
The University of Colorado at Boulder Jazz Ensemble I has been selected to perform twice at the annual International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) conference, having performed in Anaheim, California in 1999 and in New York City in 2004 with guest artist Randy Brecker. In 2003, the group was recognized as one of the nation''s top university jazz ensembles by DownBeat magazine in the annual Student Music Awards. Each year, guest artists appear in concert with the band and conduct clinics. Recent guests include Jim McNeely, Bobby Shew, John Fedchock, Ray Anderson and Byron Stripling.
JIM MCNEELY
Jim McNeely received his first critical acclaim as pianist with Ted Curson and Chet Baker. He was the last pianist in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra prior to Thad''s departure. Jim McNeely continues his association with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and a CD of Jim''s recent works is planned. A former member of the Phil Woods Quintet, many of McNeely''s compositions can be heard on Concord and Mosaic Records. Jim McNeely has released eight albums under his own name and has performed on dozens more. McNeely composes and arranges for the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band under the direction of Jon Faddis. He also continues a long association with several European orchestras, notably the West German Radio (WDR) Big Band and the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra. In July of 1998 he became Permanent Chief Conductor of the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra. A dedicated educator, McNeely serves as co-director for the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop.
