The New York City trio known as The Dark Horses sound more a product of Austin`s eclectic musical inclinations, where regular sojourns into late `60s-early `70s So-Cal country also come as naturally as ordering another Lone Star beer. And, as they frequently utilize their sidemen, Erik Kristiansen on acoustic guitar and Jon Graboff, whose pedal-steel work is keenly featured throughout, you hear a far heartier mix than any trio might offer. This self-titled recording is really the follow-up to their terrific 2001 release, Come Along. Elements of early Flying Burrito Bros. still haunt their material and quality songwriting definitely prevails throughout this easy mix of honky-tonk, ballads and alt. country twang rockers. As is their forte, it`s all about the broken heart, as made clear in songs like "Lonesome Again", "If It`s All The Same" and "(I Pity) The Poor Bastard".
