Weaned on the music of Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, John Sebastian, Donovan, early
Elton John, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles (of course), Randy Newman, Leo Kottke, Tom Waits, and other higher functioning folk/popsters, as well as rockers such as Cream, Led Zepplin, Mountain, The Who, and Mitch Ryder, plus all of the Motown, and Philly artists, guitarist/singer/songwriter Joe Rathburn is prone to eclecticism. He also loved MGM musicals, Frank Sinatra, and folk revivalists like The Kingston Trio, The Limelighters, and The Chad Mitchell Trio. Throw in comedic/satirical acts like Alan Sherman, Tom Lehrer, Homer & Jethro, and the Smothers Brothers and you get a pretty good picture of the sounds that shaped Rathburn’s music early on. Later he’d discover and come to love jazz, reggae, calypso and classical, though to a lesser extent than the pop material.
This love of everything musical jump started his career. He signed his first record deal with The Columbia Record Company at the tender age of twelve! He was to receive twelve LP records in the mail for one penny if he agreed to buy one a month for the next year. But, being the minor that he was, his father quickly nipped that contract in the bud, but not before Joe got those first twelve LPs.
Included in that seminal record collection was: Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, and Stephen Stills’ Super Session, The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper (album art by Norman Rockwell), The Bee Gees’ Odessa (way pre-disco with the red velvet album jacket), Judy Collins’ Who Knows Where the Time Goes?, Donovan’s Greatest Hits, Simon and Garfunkel’s Wednesday Morning 3AM and Sound of Silence, Deep Purple’s Hush (way before there was any smoke on the water), Led Zepplin II, Cream’s Disraeli Gears, and Joni Mitchell’s Ladies of the Canyon.
What does all this have to do with Rathburn’s sound today? He’s not quite sure, maybe nothing, but probably everything.
Today he’s known for his clever wordplay, his quite often non standard song structures, his deft and complex guitar arrangements, and his social consciousness and spirituality. But, as Elvis Costello once said: “Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.” So, quit reading this right now and pick up some Joe Rathburn music. Give it a listen, then you’ll know for yourself why so many find his music to be wonderful. Or maybe you’ll just be confused and scratching your head, but at least you’ll have experienced it for yourself, and experience is said to be the best teacher.
