RED WAGON – The Story
The song Red Wagon started as a poem written by Paul Hickey, who also wrote another poem (later converted to a song) about First Responders called The Wall / Remember Me. Paul has been involved with a volunteer group that erected a memorial at Coney Island, New York to the First Responders who perished at the World Trade Center on 9/11.
In 2008 his song became the official song of the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance (https://www.tradebit.com). It was recorded by the Jeremy Graham Band of Augusta, GA and can be seen and heard at https://www.tradebit.com .
Paul wrote Red Wagon after a visit to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) in Emmitsburg, Maryland in 2009. What prompted that visit was an interesting turn of events.
In 2008 a record company in Seattle, Washington picked up the song The Wall / Remember Me and asked for permission to put it on a composite CD – Country Fest 2008. The producers selected what they considered to be the Top 10 Country songs of 2008 by independent artists. On their own the producers decided to donate a portion of the profits from the CD to the NFFF. Paul had never heard of this organization before, so he was interested in finding out more about it. When he charted the location in Emmitsburg he realized that it was only 90 minutes away from where his son lived in Maryland, so during the next family visit he took a trip out there. He was so impressed with the site and the staff that he wrote the poem within two days, and knew that it was going to develop into something special; he had the same experience with his first encounter at the Wall of Remembrance.
It took another 18 months to translate the poem into a song, to find the right singer (12 year-old Jaycie Ward), to find the right musician (Mike Norkus), and to find an extremely talented producer (Jason Lucas) to complete the job. The final version was recorded in Nashville in June 2010.
The song was written specifically for the families of firefighters who were killed in the line of duty, and it’s taken from the viewpoint of a child reflecting on the life of her father – a brave firefighter. We hope some day that it will be adopted as a type of national anthem for firefighters across the country.
The chorus was written to show the unity and comradery for the Fire Service.
