Details:
Nathan Dell-Vandenberg’s “Maybe Not” is a modern twist on a rock and jazz quartet formed from his jazz education and passion for energetic rock music. Drawing influence from composers and improvisers within a similar vein, Nathan has created a unique synthesis of the two genres by containing an irregular instrumentation, formulating individual song forms, and exploring extended techniques to imitate the harsh sounds of rock. With “Maybe Not” there is a defined personal voice created by Nathan, which has been likened to John Zorn, Ornette Coleman, J.J. Johnson, and Black Sabbath.

“Maybe Not” has been together since the summer of 2008, playing venues such as Somewhere There, The Tranzac, and The Emmet Ray. Their repertoire has developed to a point where they have finished recording their debut album at the beautiful Humber College Studio which was released on May 28th 2010. On this album they feature the artwork of visual artist, Lori Dell, a creative mind that spans the scope of portraits to abstract. These Toronto natives are bringing the arts to the forefront with their standards set high, showcasing only the best.

This four-piece ensemble immerse themselves in improvised rock/jazz, drawing influences from abroad to create their unique vibe. Lowell Whitty, the drummer, brings a wild, untamed personality, and Anthony McKnight, a solid and expressive bass sound, each bringing a dynamic individualism to the group. They both play alongside R&B group “Chloe Watkinson and the Crossroads”. Guitarist Ian Moore is an energetic, angular instrumentalist who offers a spectrum of musicality from cacophonous soundscape to lyrical phrasing. He is also a member of indie rock group “The Elwins”.

Nathan Dell-Vandenberg as acting band leader, composer, and trombonist for “Maybe Not” has always had an insatiable thirst for exploration. The Humber Et Cetera newspaper describes him as “…pioneering his own brand of unidentifiable, mystique jazz… racking up awards”. The now degree graduate has recieved praise 5 years running at Humber College and Rosedale Heights School of the Arts, including awards like the “Jerry Johnson Award of Excellence”, the “Duke Ellington Society Scholarship”, the “Elizabeth Borden Memorial Scholarship”, the Harknett Musical Services Award”, the “John Molyneux Scholarship”, and lastly the “Performing Arts Award”. Nathan offers diverse compositional ideas and emotive trombone playing, adding to a strong balance of personalities in this jazz-rock quartet.
