The very mention of The Andrews Sisters name is enough to conjure up visions of Mom and apple pie since their first hit in the late 1930''s, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen." Their sound has been a symbol of happiness and hope for many Americans. They set the standard by which all future "girl groups" would be measured. Their parade of hits, each earning a Gold Record include: "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," "Beer Barrel Polka," "Pennsylvania Polka," "Rum And Coca Cola," "In Apple Blossom Time," "Don''t Sit Under The Apple Tree," and many more. All in all they recorded over 1800 songs and sold over 75 million records, and their sales increase every day.
LaVerne''s death in 1967 seemed to signal the end of an era, but when Bette Midler covered one of their all-time hits, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," suddenly The Andrews Sisters were discovered by a whole new generation. To top it off, Maxene and Patty Andrews found themselves starring in their own smash hit Broadway show, "Over Here!" It was a show that introduced John Travolta, Treat William and Mary Lou Henner to the world, as well.
Maxene began touring with her own one-woman show in 1979, garnering rave reviews; for instance, Rex Reed wrote: "There are moments in her show-stopping act when all three of the Andrews Sisters seem to be haunting the stage, but the spotlight belongs to Maxene. She adds laurels to her already illustrious achievements..." And, The New York Times wrote: Maxene Andrews defines the phrase "song stylist." She continued her concert tours, appeared in musicals like Stephen Sondheim''s "Follies" and Charles Bush''s "Swingtime Canteen," until just before her death in 1995. She was almost 80 years old.
