Elis Casado''s second solo work ''Crab In The lamp'' is a step forward in the musical evolution of this keyboard, piano player and composer. He uses once again the electric quartet format he''s so fond of: keyboards, guitar, bass and drums.
The album consists of five originals and two covers; The covers are Lalo Schifrin''s ''Enter the Dragon Theme'' (Elis'' tribute to the martial arts and action films from the 70''s) and jazz pianist Bill Evan''s ''Interplay''. Both arrangements played with the Hammond, conveying these tracks a funky feel.
In the rest of the album, which is obviously more personal, we are given elements of classic jazz, rock, latin and experimental grooves. Elis uses different textures with the piano and Rhodes to develop his ideas, without forgetting the extraordinary work of Miguel Ramirez with the electric guitar, who co-writes with Elis a couple of tracks.
If you like over-compressed radio-friendly mushy sound with a lot of volume this album might not be your cup of tea. But If you like good HI-FI sound with dynamics and a touch of seventies jazz, funk, rock, you will surely enjoy this instrumental album. Both sound and mastering engineer were told to work for dynamics on this record.
This album was recorded in two studio live sessions at Groove Studios in the north of Spain, and mastered at Chi-Squared Studio in Palm Beach, California.
