Details:
Thirty-some years ago there was a songwriter living inside a young man who sang in bars for a living. Not so sure his songs were good enough, he played mostly cover tunes and perfected the bar act becoming way too good at it. He never pursued marketing his own compositions, he just sang in bars and made ends meet. Then came the baby boy and a stark realization: “I don’t want to be singing, “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother,” in some bar when I’m 50 years old. So he parlayed the entertainer skills into a successful sales and business management career and the original songs were put on a shelf to sleep and collect dust. Now, the dust is being shaken off, old musical partnerships are being rekindled and the songwriter’s material is being resuscitated in the form of . . . Bent Roses.

Bent Roses is Bill Roser, Scott Bennett and Susan Roser. Bill and Scott cut their teeth and clawed their way to monthly bill-paying in Denver and Los Angeles in the mid to late 1970’s. By 1978 Bill and Scott were holding down a regular gig at the Hermosa Saloon on the Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach, CA. For just a two-man band, they had quite a show; Scott’s classic ''59 Stratocaster soared over Bill’s one-man acoustic rhythm section and they packed the place every night doing 60’s and some early 70’s classics. Everybody was having way too much fun. Bill’s songs got some exposure during those days, but the “crowd screamed out for more” and Beatles, Stones, and all the British Invasion tunes were de rigueur and were featured. Give ‘em what they want.

The guys split up in 1980 and went their separate ways doing solo gigs. Soon, Bill’s son Aaron arrived and the old Midwestern, middle-class upbringing kicked in. Gotta get a real job; gotta be responsible. And the original tunes went to the shelf.

Fast forward to 1989. Bill was slobbering away as a Tin Man (siding salesman) when fortune smiled and he met Susan. Ten months later they were married and for twenty blissful years have celebrated and enjoyed their mutual love of music. Their first date was out to a club to hear (and sit in with) Scott. At this point, Susan and Bill were serious business people and both pursued successful careers in that arena. But there was always the music . . .

Fast forward to 2006. Bill called an old musical compatriot, Andy Byron, and said, “You know, we should get together and make a CD with some of our songs just to get ‘em recorded and give to our kids (and Bill’s grandkids - OMG!) So the project started at Valley West Recording Studios where our old partner Rick Stockton runs the show, records his own excellent tunes and caters to the recording needs of Colorado’s western slope. That first long weekend session turned into Andy’s solo CD, “Somewhere or Nowhere,” (see our Links to Others page) and spawned the Bent Roses CD project, “little thoughts & Big Ideas.”

So here it is: 11 Bill Roser authored, Scott Bennett arranged tunes that are all about 30 years old but feel as fresh and warm as a Colorado Chinook. Add Susan’s sparkling vocals and Scott’s incredible attention to production details and, well, we think it sounds pretty damn good. Hope you like it!
