Black Thai – Blood From On High
Reviewed by Andy Beresky (https://www.tradebit.com)

Black Thai’s roster consists of some hard hitters from Boston’s burgeoning heavy rock/metal scene. These veterans have a shit ton of experience on their resumes, most notably from the bands We’re All Gonna Die and Cortez. As such, I expected a solid, well rounded debut EP from Black Thai, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

The songs combine Jim Healey’s signature soulful Cornellian wail, a viciously melodic twin guitar attack, and a pounding rhythm section. Soundgarden is the most obvious comparison because of the vocals and downtuned guitars, but the harmonized guitars and deft soloing pay homage to the great dual guitar bands form the NWOBHM era, and the blues based licks have a southern edge that recalls Deliverance era C.O.C. Opener “The Ladder” is a fitting summation of what the band is all about, big hooks and bigger riffs, but it’s the more slowburning, brooding tracks that expand upon the dynamic of a single riff, such as “Satan’s Toolshed”, or the slightly off-kilter rhythms of “333″ where the band really showcase their strengths.

The production is both crisp and thick. The tones are fairly modern, but they’re warm throughout, and the drums have a lot of dimension. The vocals are well done; they sit well in the mix, and are accentuated by tasteful overdubs, but they’re never overdone. It’s a fairly live and natural sounding recording, no real smoke or mirrors here.

This is definitely highly recommended if you were fans of Cortez and We’re All Going To Die, as it takes some of the strongest points of both bands and runs with them. Fans of Corrosion Of Conformity and Only Living Witness also take note, chances are this one will be up your alley. It’s exciting to think that this is the band’s debut, the first batch of songs that they cranked out, and that hopefully there’s a whole lot more in the works.
