Details:
The palpable sincerity of Rosemary Neilson’s sensitive phrasing is enhanced by the lush keyboard arrangements of pianist/composer Don Egry, whose judiciously executed sound choices dexterously create the illusion of a full orchestra complete with sax, trombone, and trumpet “solos”. “Tenderly,” the album’s title song, begins with an intimate “conversation” between Neilson and the elegantly delicate improvisation from the equally elegant touch of string bassist, Lou Pappas. Encompassing the decades, the works of respected composers such as Mitchell Parrish, Johnny Mercer, Johnny Mandel, Jimmy Van Heusen and Peggy Lee are obviously venerated by the combined efforts of these three musicians. Noteworthy among the selections is Clint Eastwood’s and Carole Bayer Sager’s “Why Should I Care?” (Yes. THAT Clint Eastwood.) “It Had To Be You” combines Egry’s keyboard “clarinet” with Neilson’s vocal which, along with the infrequently included verse, provides a new twist to an old chestnut. “Penthouse Serenade”, written in 1931, begins with Egry’s classic, concerto-like introduction, effortlessly setting the stage for Neilson to softly transport the listener’s psyche to that very penthouse from which to view the city of New York. This CD has numerous moments on which one could comment.
